Learning the Japanese language takes lots of work and dedication. However for some folks, they go through some weird approaches to learn it. It seems recently with the rising popularity of "anime" or Japanese cartoons (However the true meaning is actually "moving picture" or "animation.") many people, particularly the fan base have grown an interest in speaking the language. While it is great to show interest in other cultures the "true" reason for why they are interested is still in question. Are they really interested in the Japanese culture, or do they perceive the things they see in anime to be Japanese culture? Because in reality Japan is nothing like an anime. Many fans go through the notion that watching enough of these shows will eventually lead to speaking good Japanese. It is ridiculous as it sounds, and should not in anyway be taken seriously! That's like saying you can learn English from watching Looney Tunes. Every language requires the speaker to get a grasp of the basic grammatical structures. The only way to achieve this is through proper guidance and learning. You cannot learn grammar from watching anime. For the most part you will only end up copying what you hear without any understanding of how the word or phrase was applied. While you may hear certain words and sounds that is all irrelevant if you don't have an understanding of how sentences are formed. This is a very passive attempt at learning a language, and you will not build a strong language foundation from doing this. I have met people who claim that they have learned Japanese by watching subtitled shows. However when I hear them speak they either use the word incorrectly, or mistaken a phrase for a different meaning. In most instances, it sounds like they are imitating or quoting something heard from a show. It's no different from someone trying to sound smart by using stuff you would hear in an episode of Star Trek. To makes things worse their grammar is not even correct so what they say doesn't even make any sense. Learning Japanese is more than just repeating a few words and phrases. You need to understand the whole concept of the language. Can you imagine if someone were trying to learn English from watching Family Guy or Simpsons? Anyone telling you that they learned to speak Japanese from anime is either lying or totally clueless. In some cases anime fans will enroll in Japanese language courses, but a majority will fail at it. The reason is their association of Japanese culture with anime. Their whole preconceived notion of the Japanese language being as fun and entertaining as anime is instantly put into realization. Some will quit and lose interest in the language, while others will stay and learn it. You can tell
Slide 2: which people are truly there to learn, and those who are just fantasizing. It's okay to like anime, but to associate the entire Japanese culture with it is very shallow. If you want to learn the Japanese language, please be sure that you are truly taking it for the right reasons. Liking something that is made in Japan and appreciating the Japanese culture are two different things. Learning a language should not be based off of popularity, but of real interest.
