Nappy Cakes, or Diaper Cakes as they are more widely known in the US, are one of the most beautiful and original gifts one can make or buy for a baby shower. Gaining in popularity as a baby shower or new baby gift, a nappy cake is a truly stunning way of presenting your present. 'Surely though, you can't eat a cake made of nappies', I hear you ask! Well, no, of course you can't - a nappy cake isn't actually an edible cake, but it is designed to look like a tiered wedding cake. Each tier is formed from either rolled or swirled nappies bound tightly together and then decorated and filled with items suitable for a new baby. To make the wedding cake look, each tier should hold fewer nappies than the last so that each tier sits on top of a larger one beneath, like a tower. The choice of what gifts to put into a nappy cake is endless and can be tailored to suit any colour scheme, party theme or budget. They can even be great for people who dislike disposable nappies as these days, biodegradeable nappies can be bought just as easily - great if you want to give an eco-friendly baby gift. For those watching the pennies, the most basic nappy cake would literally just be made with nappies and decorated with ribbon - a good way of giving a small practical present look more beautiful. For those with more money to spend, try wrapping each tier with an item of baby clothing. Baby blankets & wraps, muslin squares & burp cloths, sleepsuits, bodysuits, hats and bibs all make good items to decorate a nappy cake with. Soft plush baby toys or little baby booties also make a fantastic cake topper. Don't forget to put some items inside the nappy cake as well for an added surprise for the new parents. Items such as baby brush and comb sets, pairs of little socks, rolled up items of baby clothing and bottles of baby wash and shampoo are small enough to fit neatly between the nappies. Or why not insert some lovely things for the new mum? How about some relaxing bubble bath, pair of warm socks for the labour ward, or even some packets of earplugs!! Finishing the nappy cake off with ribbon and placing on a cake board will make it even more realistic, just like a wedding cake. You could even use artificial flowers around the edges of the tiers as some wedding cakes do. The end result is a fantastic centrepiece for a baby shower combined with an amazing baby shower gift - a tiered 'cake' filled with useful and gorgeous new baby gifts. Just beware - make them too yummy looking and mum may not want to take it apart!
