Slide 1: ==== ==== Learning to live off the grid? Lets Mastermind ! www.timhill.me/living-off-the-grid ==== ==== Imagine if you will, it's a blustery, cold winter afternoon. You're sitting firmly ensconced in your nice warm living room, sipping a comforting cup of hot chocolate. You are not at all worried about how much your heating bill will be at the end of the month, however, because you do not use electricity from the big power company in your state. Even better, you're in the American southwestern desert, the afternoon temperature outside is 110 before noon, but you don't have to worry because you know your house will be nice and cool when you get home from work. In fact, not only will your home be cooled, so will the pool in the backyard where you will go and swim a couple of laps to relieve tension. Yet, at the beginning of the month, you know you won't have to pay an extremely high electric bill because you are living off the grid. Most people in the United States live on the grid...the power grid, that is. What this actually means is that the electricity you use in your house probably comes from some large power company and is generated either through nuclear sources or the burning of fossil fuels. In short, you're using power from non-renewable sources and are, essentially, helping to burn through those limited resources. A growing number of people around the world, however, are beginning reap the benefits of living off the grid. This means that these people do not get their energy from some big power company. Instead people who are living off the grid provide all of the energy needed to run their homes from other, renewable energy sources. Renewable energy is also known as green energy because these sources do not contribute to the growing amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. For most people, living off the grid means using either solar or wind energy. Areas like the southwestern United States which receive huge amounts of sunlight generally take advantage of solar panels to enable homes to be off the grid. In these areas, it's not uncommon to see homes with solar panels on their roofs which soak up the heat of the sun and convert it into electricity. Some of these homes will also use solar tubing which means that the hot water for that house is also being provided for by a renewable energy source and not utilizing a water heater powered by the local electric company. Areas like the Midwestern states where there are wide open plains will often utilize wind power. There you might see small wind turbines beside homes or even larger wind farms such as the Horse Hollow Wind farm located in Texas. Why would you want to live off the grid? There are two primary reasons people cite for choosing this way of life. First, they are able to either reduce or completely eliminate high monthly electric bills because they are providing their own energy needs. Second, living off the grid means that you are living in an earth-friendly manner and using renewable energy sources so you are not contributing to the depletion of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, or even wood. If everyone made the choice to live off the grid, our children wouldn't have to worry about where their future energy sources will come from, and our planet would be much healthier.
