Introducing your baby to a sippy cup is one of the first steps in the weaning process whether they're weaning from the breast or bottle. Many parents offer baby a sippy cup for the first time when they're about 5 or 6 months old. It takes awhile for baby to get used to drinking out of it so it's a good idea to start long before it's time for them to be completely weaned. Unfortunately, some babies refuse to drink out of sippy cups. In most cases, there is only one type of cup they will drink out of and it takes a lot of trial and error to find that exact one. Every baby is different so the sippy cup your friend's baby drinks out of might not be the right choice for your own. I was lucky and didn't have to waste my life savings trying every single sippy cup that was ever made, but I did go through my fair share of them before I discovered the one that my babies would accept. Each sippy cup differs from the next. Some have handles, some don't. Some have hard plastic tops, some are shaped and feel similar to the breast. Interestingly enough, both my children chose the one with a hard plastic spout. There's also been a lot of talk about Bisphenol A (BPA) and how this type of plastic chemical is bad for us and our babies. Even small doses of BPA can have a negative impact on our health. Many consumer products contain BPA so it can be very worrisome for parents. Thankfully, more and more companies are now making bottles and sippy cups that are BPA free which helps ease our minds (and our health) a little. Canada has already placed a ban on baby bottles containing BPA and more and more states in the US are following suit. So when you're choosing a sippy cup for your little one, remember to keep these factors in mind: Is it BPA-free? Does my baby prefer a soft or hard spout? Is it easy for my baby to hold on their own? Does it clean easily? Will it need to be replaced frequently? Is it a reasonable price? Is it big enough to hold the right amount of liquid? Answering these questions before you start buying may help save you the trouble of trying every kind of sippy cup you can get your hands on before finding the right one for your baby.
