So why do people not know that reciprocal linking is virtually worthless nowadays? One of the main problems is that most people are no "SEO Guru's" and think that its great and fair that if they link to me then I link back to you. The other problem is that the reciprocal link exchanges that dominate the search results built up their authority when reciprocal linking was worth doing, about five years ago! So the unsuspecting website owner does a simple search for "link exchange" or "link exchange directory", and is presented with a load of nice looking sites full of people who want to swap links with them. Easy. But absolutely a waste of time in this day and age. What they are seeing in those results is a hangover from the old days - and the reciprocal link exchange owner is not going to tell them that reciprocal links are not worth the time they take to collect is he?! This is from Google's own guidelines on linking: "However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes exclusively for the sake of crosslinking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include: ......Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")". Now "excessive" is an undefined amount, however Matt Cutts, head of Spam at Google, mentions in several blog posts a total of 100 links. So when you visit the reciprocal link exchange and see lots of sites who have swapped hundreds of random reciprocal links, ask yourself, are they doing their sites more harm than good? So why risk it, and spend time and effort gaining reciprocal links, which also can leak traffic on your own site if people leave via the reciprocal links??? The answer is to only build one way inbound links. That means, another site links to you, but you do not link back to them. It is far trickier to obtain these links, and you will not find a reciprocal link exchange directory telling you that, or how to go about getting one way backlinks to your site. So next time you need to get some links, skip on past the reciprocal link exchange directory, no matter how big and full it looks! They are carrying a cargo of poisoned apples, and your site will benefit more from building only one way inbound links in the long run.
