Slide 1: The Golf Swing Plane
The golf swing plane is an important fundamental of the golf swing. Simply defined, the swing plane is the path that the golf club travels during your swing. A consistent swing plane will keep the club on a similar path for each swing. To visualize the swing plane, picture a wide pane of glass that runs from the ball to just above your shoulders. The arms and club should remain below the pane of glass throughout the swing. By consistently repeating the same swing plane, a golfer will improve their ball striking as a result of solid contact at impact. A good golf swing plane will improve your accuracy, increase distance, and lower your golf scores. Swing planes will vary from individual to individual based on a player’s height and address position. A taller golfer will have a more upright plane while a shorter golfer will have a flatter plane. The longer the club you use, the flatter the swing plane becomes. Other factors affecting the swing plane are spine angle, head position, distance from the ball, and hip rotation. The golf swing plane is made up of three parts: your backswing, your downswing and your follow through. In the modern golf swing, there is the one plane swing and the two plane swing. A correct swing plane is initiated by turning the shoulders and hips while allowing the arms and hands to lift in response to this movement. The lifting of the hands or arms separate of this turning movement will break the imaginary glass pane and take the club off the intended arc. Maintaining a steady head, consistent spine angle (no lifting of the upper body), and repeatable address position (distance from the ball), will also ensure that the club is staying on the same swing path throughout the swing. There are many golf swing plane drills to help golfers work on improving their swing plane. Here are a few of the swing plane tips I work on to help me stay consistent with my plane: As the club goes back and up on the backswing, have the butt end of the club facing an imaginary line that is drawn straight back from the golf ball Maintain your spine angle as this will keep your swing plane more consistent…Feel like you are sitting down during the swing

Slide 2: As you start the downswing return the club on the same path as the backswing…Feel like you have a one plane swing Maintain a consistent head position throughout the swing Do not sway off the ball during the backswing Work on excellent balance during the entire swing Feel as if you stay down and under the imaginary pane of glass The golf swing plane can seem complicated and difficult to understand. Work on a few of my tips each time you go to the practice range. I know these tips will help you develop a more consistent swing plane which will lead to lower golf scores.
