The vast majority of the beliefs of the Mormon religion are based on their interpretation of scripture, along with what they call the Book of Mormon. According to this book, "As part of the Restoration of the gospel, God brought forth the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. By the power of God, Joseph Smith translated this book from an ancient record written on gold plates. The Book of Mormon is 'a record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fullness of the everlasting gospel.'" The Mormon Church teaches that the Book of Mormon is therefore another revelation to an apostle and that it should be regarded just as highly as the teachings in the scriptures. Mormons believe that there has always been a testament of Jesus Christ dating as far back as Adam and Eve, and that there has been an apostasy and a restoration of that testament several times throughout history. They believe that the Book of Mormon is a restoration to the latest apostasy. The restoration of the priesthood of the Christian church is a teaching found in the Book of Mormon, wherein certain apostles of Christ are given divine authority to act and to teach on his behalf. It is believed that Joseph Smith received divine ordination to continue this line of God's priesthood, and that those who serve in the church are also given divine priesthood as well. The belief in what is called the Great Apostasy is also outlined in the Book of Mormon, wherein those who led the Christian faith after the death of Jesus began to teach doctrine that was incorrect or corrupted. The Mormon Church teaches that the ordination of Joseph Smith was to serve as a restoration of this apostasy.
