Slide 6: Social media are media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction, using Internet- and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumergenerated media (CGM). Social media can be said to have three components; 1.Concept (art, information, or meme). 2.Media (physical, electronic, or verbal). 3.Social interface (intimate direct, community engagement, social viral, electronic broadcast or syndication, or other physical media such as print).
Slide 7: Social Networking Social Networking focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services. The main types of social networking services are those which contain category divisions (such as former school-year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn widely used worldwide;

Slide 13: Business Social Networking   LinkedIn … September 22, 2009 Celebrated 48 million users Estimates 1 million users sign up every 2 weeks. "You may not be surprised to learn that companies such as technology powerhouse Salesforce.com use social networking sites to search for job candidates, but even buttoned-down firms such as Allstate have gotten with the program. In fact, 40 percent of Fortune 100 companies use LinkedIn specifically for that purpose. That’s why it’s critical to have a profile on LinkedIn..." ~CBS MoneyWatch 
Slide 14: How I Found My Dream Job Using LinkedIn, Forbes Oct 7, 2009 "I conducted a LinkedIn search for the company and discovered that one of my former co-workers, a direct connection, was connected to someone there through previous work experience..." "...As you can guess, since I wrote this article, the former co-worker graciously introduced me and even praised me (hallelujah!) to the person at my first-choice company. Two days later, I received a phone call inviting me to schedule an interview. A week and a half later, I was hired." ~Avril David, an energy and environment analyst for Project Performance Corporation (In Forbes)

Slide 25: 1. Get the word out. 2. Get LinkedIn recommendations from your colleagues. 3. Find out where people with your backgrounds are working. 4. Find out where people at a company came from. 5. Find out where people from a company go next. 6. Check if a company is still hiring. 7. Get to the hiring manager. 8. Get to the right HR person. 9. Find out the secret job requirements. 10.Find startups to join. *Bonus - Build your network before you need it.
Slide 26: Use LinkedIn “status updates” to let your network know that you are looking for a new job. You may also wish to let others know that you are looking to connect with individuals around your industry or brand.
Slide 27: A strong recommendation from your manager highlights your strengths and shows that you were a valued employee. A recommendation from a co worker or former colleague is often easier than from management. Karma comes into play here, if you give a recommendation, your likely to receive in return.

Slide 30: Start NOW. Your community is waiting for what you can add. If you’re already building your connections, keep going. Try a new network. (more on that in the follow up workshop.) Remember the promise from those we seek counsel. The Lord loves the one who works. “…winter will surely give way to the warmth and hope of a new spring.” ~President Dieter F. Uchtdorf “When our wagon gets stuck in the mud, God is much more likely to assist the man who gets out to push than the man who merely raises his voice in prayer—no matter how eloquent the oration. President Thomas S. Monson put it this way: “It is not enough to want to make the effort and to say we’ll make the effort. . . . It’s in the doing, not just the thinking, that we accomplish our goals. If we constantly put our goals off, we will never see them fulfilled.” ~President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
