Slide 1: L.A. Noire PDF Review L.A. Noire makes the player feel like a real detective in 1940's Los Angeles. At least that's what I felt after a few hours in. L.A. Noir is a crime drama set in the backdrop of 1940's Los Angeles. Developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. L.A. Noire is a visceral crime drama make no mistake. This is a mature videogame in every sense of the word. At the start up screen your greeted to a flickering "L.A. Noire" sign in black and white. The tone and atmosphere is immediately felt at the start menu screen. Much has been made of if L.A. Noire has real sandbox style gameplay. L.A. Noire isn't a real sandbox game like Red Dead Redemption or GTA IV. L.A. Noire has very light sandbox elements but its pretty linear overall. If you played Mafia II its very similar style to that. L.A. Noire being linear isn't bad it actually fits its style of gameplay better IMO. You play the role of World War II veteran Cole Phelps (protagonist) now "beat cop" in 1940's Los Angeles. After a few chapters of doing mundane cop work like searching crime scenes for evidence or chasing down parolees Cole finally gets his big break. Cole gets his break by solving a particular murder that took place outside a shop in broad daylight. After nabbing the suspect Cole gets promoted to Traffic Detective. It takes about two hours of gameplay to reach Dectective in L.A. Noire. Its probably too early for me to tell you about L.A. Noire's story. What I can tell you is that Cole Phelps has a history with other officers at the LAPD that relates back to his days as a soldier in WW2 that he isn't proud of. Click here to buy L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition
Slide 2: The driving and controlling of vehicles is more responsive than GTA IV. You don't get the highlighted line on the maps for waypoints. Instead your partner tells you the directions real time. Just press Square (PlayStation 3 Dual Shock 3 controller) to get directions. You can set waypoints on your map anytime. Using sirens while driving gets you to your destination quicker. I only had one real shootout sequence in L.A. Noire so far. The auto targeting aim assist is strong and shooting felt accurate. There is a cover system as well just press R1. L.A. Noire has a knack of making you feel like a detective. Much of that has to do with the much hyped facial animation technology Team Bondi used. I can say without a glimpse of hesitation the facial animations in L.A. Noire are the best in videogames. The facial animations while questioning witnesses is so visceral and realistic in presentation you might mistake it for real TV. Much of L.A. Noire's gameplay has to do with leveling up Cole with experience points and ranking higher up the Detective ladder. You gain exp for solving cases, collecting evidence, interrogating suspects and questioning witnesses amongst other things. "Intuition Points" are earned when level up Cole Phelps. Intuition points are used in situations for questioning suspects, witnesses or gaining clues for evidence faster. If you can't find a clue or figure out what a suspect is thinking or a witness' intentions are spend a interrogation point. If it wasn't for the realistic facial animations much of the gameplay wouldn't be as intense or visceral as it is. Click here to buy L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition
Slide 3: Team Bondi recreated 1940's L.A. with deep colors and good texture work. L.A. looks authentic and alive I just wished you could play around in the city more but that's OK. The visuals asides from the facial technology isn't as great however. When you think about that, it has more to do with how great the facial animations are which just makes the rest of the game look average. Normally Rockstar games takes a long time to really get going and L.A. Noire isn't an exception. The sound design and music are top notch and creates a real believable atmosphere. Everything regarding the sound design in L.A. Noire creates a bustling 1940's Los Angeles. The dialog while interrogating suspects and questioning witnesses is done really well also. Simple conversations with your partner can be entertaining at times. After a few hours I can give you an easy rundown on what I know so far. This game makes the player feel like he or she really is a detective. The presentation in L.A. Noire creates a believable crime drama that is addicting and fun as games get. It maybe slow early on but I have no doubts this game will be amazing by the time I finish it. Thanks for reading. Click here to buy L.A.
