When you're trying to get pregnant, did you know that there is only a small window during the month when you can actually conceive? Most of us simply try to fall pregnant, thinking and assuming that it can happen any time, but that's not actually correct. We also think that we need to have sex in certain positions to get pregnant, but that's not entirely correct either. The best way to get pregnant is to know when you are most fertile during the month, so that you and your partner give yourself the best possible chance of successful conception. A woman's cervical mucus is perhaps the most important sign of fertility, however there is only a few days of each month, around the time of ovulation, where the mucus changes to allow and encourage sperm to pass through the cervix. When a woman begins her monthly menstrual cycle the vagina is quite closed off to the thought of allowing sperm to enter thus making conception occur...but during the cycle a woman undergoes several crucial changes in the texture of her cervical mucus, that eventually allow conception to take place. At the beginning of a woman's cycle the vagina is quite dry with little or no mucus at all. As the monthly cycle progresses, the cervical mucus starts to change in texture, going from being quite sticky to very creamy, and then almost like the consistency of an egg white. At this time you should be able to stretch the mucus between your fingers as it is quite strong and full of elasticity, and this is when you are at your most fertile and therefore likely to fall pregnant. As soon as ovulation occurs, the mucus quickly dries up and the cervix closes again, in readiness for the next monthly cycle. So you really only have that small window of a couple of days that are the best days to get pregnant. Funny how this is actually so technical - there's definitely an art to successful conception! Now it is quite easy to tell when you are ovulating - some women experience pain around their lower abdomen, similar to the discomfort of period pain, while others experience a feeling of wetness throughout the days they are ovulating. The best way to tell if you really are ovulating, so you can be sure you are at your most fertile, is to chart the changes in your cervical mucus for a couple of months or so. If you can clearly see a pattern in the change of the mucus you will know exactly when ovulation is taking place. If you're having trouble interpreting your chart, a quick visit to your doctor will help you confirm both your ovulation time during the month and the best days to get pregnant. Getting pregnant takes a little time and a lot of practice, as we all know, but understanding ovulation and how it affects your fertility allows you to take total control of your body during the conception process and beyond.
