Low Self-Esteem Within a Relationship 

ou might say, low self-assurance in any dating relationship becomes a kind of a push-pull for people fighting with low self esteem are convinced that they don’t seem to be lovable and such, while attempts are made to start a relationship with the person they are dating in an attempt to prove differently. This is a likely self-defeating, demoralizing not to mention an harmful situation, and one that could repeat before the person afflicted chooses to get rid of the problem.

Feelings of worthlessness, self effacement, lack of confidence, and difficulty achieving goals can be part of the picture of low self esteem. Sadly, this can bring down otherwise bright, talented and successful people and prevent individuals from realizing their full potential. Our relationships can have a big impact on your self esteem, for good or ill. A happy, fulfilling, supportive relationship can bolster our feelings of self worth. Conversely, a toxic, hurtful, emotionally or psychologically abusive relationship can diminish our feeling of worthiness and value, lowering our self esteem. Unfortunately, feeling badly can drive us to choose partners who reinforce our feelings of low self esteem because we don't feel we deserve any better. Unfortunately, when a relationship is emotionally abusive, there is a kind of "programming" occurring. The victim is being convinced that he or she is inferior, incompetent, or possibly crazy. The abuser has an agenda to control the other partner and therefore will say critical and confidence destroying things. This continues to drive self esteem down in the victim. To rebuild self esteem and charge it to greater heights, it may be necessary to sever contact with the emotional abuser and take time to rebuild self image. It can be very helpful to surround yourself with those in your life who love and support you to help "reprogram" the negative messages of your abuser. Taking good care of yourself physically, getting counseling, and getting in tune with and honoring your own physical and emotional responses can also help you to move forward and attain greater well being. While it may be difficult to follow through with a first, you may find that over time, as you feel better, your desire to have contact with your toxic partner may diminish. The feelings of low self esteem that kept you around, thinking that you deserved no better, will have lessened and you might come to truly believe that you are better off without the toxic partner in your life.
