A few months ago Google and Bing admitted to using social media to collecting information from the social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter for determining the rank of web pages in their search engines. Personally I (and many others on the web) believe the search engines are noticing social media and taking it into consideration, if it's not to the extent we believe then you still can't go wrong by doing both.
