Slide 1: Living the Life of an Expat The issue of Expat Relocation may seem like a complicated one. But you can get the best deal if you negotiate. Know what you mean to the company. Use this to improve the offer being made. When to Move If you have kids the best time is during the end of the school year. This will make it easier for them. Be certain you get financial compensation if this isn't possible. Next, determine how much help the company will offer with the move. If they won't finance the whole procedure, bring only what is necessary.Make sure the employer answers the costs of shipping and travel. When you get to your new home, prepare birth certificates, tax papers, school records and other necessary documents. Negotiating Tips If the company has not done so, negotiate for reimbursement on your travel expenses. Ask for financial assistance that is adequate for renting a home. You cannot honestly expect them to finance buying a house. But they should be willing to pay for some of it. If you are sending the children to a private school, talk with your employer about shouldering the expenses. At the very least they should take care of the difference in cost relative to your native country. Other Facts about the Expat Package The package is set up by the company / employer for the employee who has to move to another country. The contents will depend on the employee position, the pay and the expenses their family will incur. Package Features At the very least the employer will provide housing and moving allowances. The costs incurred moving from the airport to their new home will be included in the package too. This is standard for all employees regardless of their position in the company. The housing provisions vary. Some will offer residence as long as they are required to stay in the country. Others will only pay for the cost of renting a place. For lower level employees, they may be provided temporary housing for only 30 days. Almost all medical companies have health care insurance. This is very important especially if you have children. Finally you have to consider the vehicle. Most companies will provide a company car for use. Costs of fuel and repair will be handled by the employer. But this is for company use only. That is why most expats prefer to use public transportation or rent a vehicle.
