And if you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, then you are, too. I finally discovered the answer to this problem - growing my own organic produce at home! Now before you say, "That's just too complicated for me!", let me tell you that this worthwhile endeavor is nowhere near as difficult as I once thought it was. Take it from me - a former "black thumb" - if I can learn to grow organic, then trust me - you can, too! And if you still have your doubts, let me tell you that if you give yourself a chance, once you take your first bite of a ripe, delicious, nutritious piece of organic produce grown in your own garden with your own hands, all your doubts will immediately vanish! Why should you learn to grow organic? Well, for starters, organic produce is much, much healthier (and way tastier, too!) than commercially grown produce. Not only is the nutritional content of organic produce higher, but there are also no commercial pesticides, fertilizers, or artificial growth chemicals that you body has to try to figure out how to deal with. As you can imagine, those chemicals usually leads to problems - fatigue, depression, bloating, and even sometimes serious disease. Secondly, it is fulfilling! Not only does it give you a chance to get out in the sun and do something with your hands, but it is a wonderful chance to get the kids involved, too! These are the things life lessons are made of - the parent and the child, working side by side to produce an exciting result. And imagine the thrill and satisfaction of sitting down together and eating the delicious produce that you have nurtured with your own hands. I hope you will consider learning to grow organic. It requires minimal investment, but yields huge benefits! Now, let's get started, shall we? Here is just a very brief summary of how to begin. oFind a small plot of land that gets full sun during the day (at least 6-8 hours of sun), and that has good drainage. Be sure that your garden won't flood if there is heavy rain! If drainage is a problem, consider using raised rows to plant in. Raised rows offer the additional benefit of giving you space to walk between the rows without stepping on your planting soil. oDO NOT start our too big! A plot that is 4' X 8' or so is more than sufficient to start with. If you
Slide 2: start out too big, you will end up discouraged and lose interest in maintaining your beautiful garden. Mark off your designated plot with wooding stakes and string, so you get a good feel for the area you have to work with. oA little bit of planning goes a long way. Plan out what vegetables you want to grow, where they will be placed, etc. Salad greens (lettuces, and spinach) are good ones to start out with. These can either be started from seed, or purchased as small plants from a nursery. oNow, you are ready to begin preparing the soil. Turn it over well with a sharp spade, and break up any clods with a garden fork. Your fertilizer is going to be good, rich compost, which you can either buy or make yourself. oAfter planting, be sure to mulch generously, both to control weeds, and also to maintain water in the soil. Grass clippings, old leaves, and straw make excellent mulch, in addition to mulch you can buy from garden supply stores. The actual care of your new organic garden will be a topic for another article. But these steps will give you a great start as you take the challenge of learning to grow organic!
