Slide 1: Depression In Males Men aren't like women. Sure, I know that this is stunning news. Alert the media! It's true though; men are totally different from females in more ways than one would normally think. Due to their differences they're more vulnerable to some serious side effects of depression. 'Vulnerable' is not a word that's often associated with males and that is a part of the problem. Males, as a rule, do not speak about their feelings. They don't like to be considered vulnerable, weak, in need of help, or fragile. A man is way less likely to open up to a buddy, a co-worker, partner or medical professional that they are feeling depressed. Depression affects males as well as females, yet the medical profession sees much fewer men than females because men do not seek assistance for this condition as a lot as their female counterparts do. Men feel the need to be powerful, in control, competitive and often neglect their mental health in the process of being 'manly'. Men have historically had the role of being tough and self-reliant, and sometimes the ladies in their lives maintain that very same view of the male role. A man wanting to talk about his feelings of vulnerability and fragility may be taken as a sign of weakness to some females and this can lead to the loss of a relationship. Because males are not inclined to believe they need help and think that it is a sign of virility that they'll deal with whatever life throws their way-they aren't often aware of the symptoms of depression. Instead of looking for help, males might attempt to compensate for their feelings of depression by increasing alcohol consumption or using drugs to mask their pain. This can result in risky behavior. Some will spend extra time at work and less time at home, resulting in problems in relationships. In case you're suffering from depression you could be underperforming at work, feel much less likely to talk than usual, you're feeling irritable, really feel achy and you're worrying more and more about issues in your life. Physical problems, akin to erectile dysfunction can lead to depression in men. Sometimes depression could cause sexual problems, but the good news is that there are numerous treatments obtainable to help with both. Males should know that depression can affect them in addition to women and must know the signs: * Feelings of hopelessness * Loss of appetite * Anxiety * Lack of sex drive * Trouble concentrating * Lack of energy * No desire to maintain personal hygiene * Losing interest in individuals or activities If you're experiencing any of these symptoms it's ok to speak to your doctor. You're not superman. Asking for assistance does not make you weak. what is Seasonal Affective Disorder
