Slide 1: ==== ==== There IS an all natural supplement that will help you to avoid diabetes and obesity. Check it out here. http://www.sghealthaffiliate.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=195&url=40 ==== ==== Depending on which report you read, 30-50 % of the American population is obese. To put this in perspective, you are an obese man if you weigh 20% or more over your ideal weight or your BMI is 30kg/M or more. For women, this threshold rises to 25% over your ideal weight or a BMI of 30. As we are learning, obesity has serious health consequences. The most disturbing fact is that these statistics have doubled for adults, and tripled for children in the last thirty years. The obesity epidemic we've seen over the past four decades has resulted in increased numbers of people with metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X). Syndrome X is arguably the fastest growing medical issue in America. A group of symptoms such as insulin resistance, high blood pressure, hyper lipidemia (Elevated cholesterol and triglycerides), heart disease and added weight gain characterizes Syndrome X. It is a dangerous, self-perpetuating cycle. The key to this problem is insulin resistance, which for many people begins in their mid twenties. Excessive body-fat content reduces your sensitivity to insulin even further, which makes your already overworked pancreas work even harder to produce more and more insulin. Your body derives energy from the glucose in your blood. From your body's perspective, glucose is life. When the insulin your body makes is insufficient to metabolize the glucose in your blood, the energy will not be discarded; your body will store energy that cannot be used immediately in the form of fat. This begins the cycle, and as the body continues to store fat, it will slowly but methodically overwhelm your metabolic machinery. This will leave an increasing amount of serum glucose that will eventually be stored in the body as fat. Increased body-fat mass will more than likely result in high blood pressure and hyper lipidemia (cholesterol & triglycerides). So how do we overcome this vicious cycle of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease? The answer is two-fold. The first part requires a close look at your dietary habits. Americans in general consume too much sugar. In the early 1900's, the per capita consumption of sugar was 5 pounds per year. Today, on an average, Americans consumes more than 150 pounds of sugar in a year. You also improve your metabolism by eating a balanced diet of lean protein and fiber-rich foods. This balance of macro-nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) will help your body cope with the glucose in your blood. Fiber in particular is crucial to this process because fiber tends to slow the absorption of glucose, which will give your metabolic machinery an excellent chance of turning blood/glucose into energy, not fat. Breaking the cycle also requires that you get your body more sensitive to insulin. Recently, researchers have recently discovered that fat plays a pivotal role in insulin sensitivity. Yes you heard me right; scientists now believe that dietary fat is the key to stopping the syndrome X cycle.
Slide 2: Fats play a pivotal role in the body. Each of the trillions of cells in your body has a membrane made from a particular type fat. I'm referring to essential fats, fats that your body cannot make but needs for health. If you want to be healthy, you MUST get these essential fats in your diet. Two main, essential fats are Omega-3, and Omega-6 fats. The ideal ratio for these fats in the body is about 1 to 1. Unfortunately, the average American has an essential fat ratio of 1 to 20, Omega-3 to Omega-6. Experts believe that almost 90% of the American public does not have sufficient Omega-3 essential fats in their diets. Research continues to show that these fats are essential for health and can be helpful in warding-off disease. The richest dietary source of Omega-3 fats is fish, and unless you are eating fish 3-4 times per week, there is a strong possibility that your body could benefit from Omega III supplementation. Current research into the role of Omega-3 fats has found that these fats are essential to prevent serious health conditions. Researchers have shown Omega-3 fats can reduce inflammation, and may help lower your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Cognitive studies show that Omega-3 fats are essential to brain structure and function and can improve cognitive function. To underscore the importance of Omega-3 fats, expectant mothers who are deficient in these essentials fats are more likely to give birth to children who have a greater risk for vision and nerve problems. The latest research on Omega-3 fats is beginning to discover the role of these fats in the metabolism of glucose. Many experts believe the key to reversing the growing problem of diabetes is with dietary fats. 600,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes every year. Diabetes accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually. Statistics show that there are more than 15 million cases in the U.S., with another 5 million adults who have the disease and do not even know. As a nutritionist, I can tell you that the quickest way to improve your health is to improve the quality of the fats in your diet. Now research is showing us why this is true. We are learning why the Mediterranean diet works so well to avert diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The Mediterranean diet works because it includes these essential Omega-3 fats. It is the quality of the fats in the Mediterranean diet that make a difference. As a society, we have been lulled into a sense of security that our food supply is "high quality" because some government agency has put its stamp of approval on it. To me, quality means "as close as possible to natural". This latest research is fascinating and deserves a closer look. I know a lot of people who just cannot loose weight; that is until they start looking at the quality of their diets. I did a radio interview with Stuart Tomc, the Research Director for Nordic Naturals. Stuart has more than two decades experience in the field of Nutritional Medicine and is an expert on peerreviewed nutritional research. In the past, Stuart has served as a consultant to the Chief Medical Officer of the World Health Organization. He is intimately involved with Omega-3 research and he is a master at distilling the scientific and delivering it to listeners in understandable pieces. The information on this radio show can make a significant difference in your health. Also on this show, I'll ask Stuart; are all fish oil supplements created equal? Fish oil supplements have become a vital part of nutritional and preventive medicine. There are literally hundreds of fish oil supplements available today. However, few consumers realize that there are two distinctly different molecular forms of fish oil. Your fish oil could be one containing synthetic ethyl esters, or
Slide 3: it could be the natural triglyceride form. More importantly, do these different delivery forms of Omega-3 fats make a significant difference in the body?
