Getting older plays a significant role, as we tend to become less active as we age, which means burning fewer calories. It is a fact that, after the age of 30, we begin to lose lean muscle mass at the rate of 6.6 pounds per decade. Add to that a poor diet, and the percentage of loss increases in the range of 20-40%! Startling facts, but there is more. With age comes a decrease in the necessary number of calories required for energy. Add to that a curious predilection to eat more, and you have got a recipe for disaster - weight gain in menopause. Ending up with more fat than muscle mass is going to mean one thing: your metabolism is going to slow down. A slower metabolism with no reassessment of food intake and activity levels equals weight gain. It is not menopause and weight gain, its not paying attention to your changing body's needs that is the problem. Now, some women might tend to eat less as they age. This sounds good in theory, but the problem is that what they do eat is not enough to replace the hormones and other nutrients needed to sustain a healthy body. Weight gain in menopause happens anyway, even though they are eating less. So, menopause and weight gain are interrelated, but not exclusive. Just because you are going through menopause is not the reason for any weight gain you are experiencing. The two factors you need to monitor are: 1. The quality of food you ingest 2. The amount of activity you engage in. Here is how to rev up your metabolism so weight gain in menopause are no longer issues for you: 1. Engage in resistance training. Work up to performing weight training 3 times a week. Weight training is the best way to produce that all-important lean muscle mass your body is lacking. Weight training is a progressive activity, as the more tone you get, the more resistance you will need to continue your progress in gaining lean muscle. 2. Eat carefully, but eat, nonetheless. Do not starve yourself. Eat sensibly, choosing healthy foods to replace nutrients and provide support for your systems. Food is the fuel our body uses to rebuild

Starving yourself will not only throw off your glucose levels, making you weak and giving you cravings for more bad stuff, but it will also unbalance your hormone levels. Not eating sets up a vicious circle that will doom you to failure and poor health. You do not want to spend your remaining years in an unhealthy state. A study done by The Women's Healthy Lifestyle Project determined that menopause and weight gain does not have to go together if you take the necessary steps to prevent it. After 5 years of consistent effort, the women who worked hard at monitoring food intake and exercise not only did not gain weight during their menopause, but actually lost an average of 2 pounds. Women in the study who did not work out and monitor food intake gained an average of 5.6 pounds. So stop complaining about weight gain in menopause and take care of your body.
