Our Cardinals have been busy as you can see from the newsletter. There are many people I would like to recognize this past month for their hard work and dedication to SCIS. First, I can not thank Mrs. Carpenter enough for her support and encouragement in the PTA fall membership campaign. We have 100% staff participation and that is something I am very proud of. Thank you also to all the parents who have joined. We had a tremendously successful membership drive this year. Your support of the PTA allows to us sponsor many different programs and activities for the students. Thank you to Lisa O’Brien for organizing the fall social. A good time was had by all who attended. Thank you also to all the teachers and parents who volunteered their time to help with the event. Red Ribbon week would not have been possible without the efforts of Red Ribbon Chair Justine Powell. Thank you to Justine for all your hard work. Along with report cards, came cookies to all our students making the honor roll. Thank you to Suzie Wilson, Academic Recognition Chair and the other volunteers who passed out the treats. I would like to welcome Marla Schmidt to the board; she has agreed to chair the upcoming 8th grade dance. There are some exciting new plans for the dance this year so stay tuned for more information. We recently received feedback on our 1st nine weeks assessments. Student at SCIS have much to be proud of, consistently, throughout the grade levels and in all the various areas of content. As you read through this amazing newsletter, you’ll be able to learn all about some of the wonderful things that have being happening around school. In addition, several great snapshots have been included as well. Last night CCISD held its first district-wide Band Exhibition. It was such a magnificent event! As we delve deeper into the fall and winter months, you’ll be in for one fabulous treat after another. Our athletics and fine arts programs have so much excellence to share with you, as you find yourself entertained in the process. I want to make sure that each of you know about our upcoming visitors. A team of instructional experts from Texas and across the country will be visiting CCISD 11/911/13 to conduct a Curriculum Management Audit. The Curriculum Management Audit is a nationally recognized researched-based school district evaluation process. The audit will focus on the components of curriculum and student achievement throughout our district. CCISD is seeking members of the community to share their knowledge of these components with the audit team. Interviews will be held Wednesday, 11/11 at 4:15 PM in the board room at the Education Support Center, 2425 E. Main Street in League City, TX 77573. Slide 2: Page 2 Sync Up With Space Center During our first PTA General Meeting on November 5th, 2009 at 1pm, the Laura Recovery Center will speak to us about their “Choices - Impacting the Lives of Teenagers” Program. Every day, from the time we wake, we begin to make choices. While most choices, like what we wear or what we have for breakfast, may have little impact on our life, other choices, made in an instant, may have life-long consequences. The Laura Recovery Center (LRC) has developed a program for teens that addresses issues they face most every day. These issues include the following topics. * * * * * Running Away Dating Violence Internet Safety Substance Abuse Positive Choices This will be a parent preview of the program which will be presented to the student body at Space Center Intermediate later in the year. Slide 3: Page 3 Sync Up With Space Center Space Center Intermediate School PTA The Fall PTA Membership drive was a big success. SCIS PTA has enrolled over 540 members to date. SCIS parents are thrilled to receive this newsletter via email as an added benefit to joining PTA. PTA is pleased to announce we will receive many awards from Texas PTA ~ including the coveted GOLDEN APPLE award for 100% participation of the school full-time faculty. We will also receive the MARS (Men are Really Super) award, the Early Bird Award, and the "500 Club" for having over 500 members. The homeroom classes with the most parental enrollment enjoyed an ICE CREAM SUNDAE party courtesy of PTA. These classes were: 6th Grade: Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Harmon (tied); 7th Grade: Mrs. Grimes 8th Grade: Mr. McCandless. Thanks so much to those homeroom classes for their overwhelming support of PTA. The annual cleaning up our bays and waterways Trash Bash will be held on Saturday, March 27th, 2010. Please logon to www.trashbash.org to register and pick your clean-up site. See you on the 27th of March. Earth Day 2010 Start collecting your magazines now! We are going to have a contest to see which 4th period class can collect the most magazines and the winning class will receive their own recycle bags! the magazines will can be brought up to the school starting the week of April 19th with the final weigh-in occurring on April 22nd, Earth Day. The winning class will be announced on Friday, April 23rd once the stacks have been weighted and recorded by Student Council and National Junior Honor Society. Start making you stacks now. Slide 7: Page 7 Sync Up With Space Center Red Ribbon Week October 28 – October 30 The 2009-2010 Red Ribbon Week was observed October 28th through October 30th. Red Ribbon Week is designed to promote an understanding of the dangers of alcohol and drug usage. Activities were planned for each day to help students actively participate in becoming informed of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. In conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, a drug awareness program was presented to the students in their science classes. Red Ribbon Week Chair/Justine Powell and a team of volunteers decorated our school with red ribbons on Tuesday, October 27th. Red Ribbon Rally Day was the theme on Wednesday, October 28th when students and staff donned as many red items as they can possibly can. All students received a Red wristband to wear for the week. Students who showed their Red Ribbon Week Spirit by wearing the most red were awarded prizes during lunches. Katarina Tomasic, Austin Lovell, Kari Bush, Kelsey Rosenbaum (pictured) and Caroline Gomez were among the winners! I'm too "Bright" to do Drugs theme on Thursday, October 29th brought an array of neon or bright colors throughout the campus. All students received a “Space Center Intermediate - Too Bright to Do Drugs” Pencil in class. "Team" up against Drugs theme on Friday, October 30th allowed everyone to show support for his/her favorite sports team!
Slide 8: Page 8 Sync Up With Space Center "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" Fall Social Our fall social, "Take Me Out To The Ballgame", was a big success ! A HUGE Thanks goes out to all the parents, teachers and volunteers that helped to make our Fall Social such a great event. All of the students had a fun evening and many went home with fantastic Prizes! We had four winners in our Design-A-Tee Contest. Our First Place winners were Bailey Breaux and Kathryn Tanzberger; Second Place went to Kari Bush and the Third Place winner was Jacquelyn O'Brien. Thank you to all of those who participated ~ the shirts all looked great! We also had several winners in the Speed Pitch Contest. The winners were: 6th grade: Anthony Colonetta and Kari Bush; 7th grade: Bradley George and Alex Held, and 8th grade: William West and Tierney Conley. Our Raffle Winners for the evening were: Samantha Nidini for the Girl's Luggage Set, Rachel Lopez for the Girl's Accessory Set, and the big winner of the evening was Kyle Ruszkowski who won both the Lance Berkman Autographed Jersey and the Roy Oswalt Autographed Baseball. Congratulations to all the winners! Thanks to all for a great event!
Slide 9: Page 9 Sync Up With Space Center National Junior Honor Society The Cardinal chapter of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) met in October and started planning our first fundraising project. NJHS will be selling candygrams to SCIS students during December. Members also decided which committees they would be serving: candy cane, teacher assistance or public relations. Upcoming service hour opportunities include Brookwood Carnival on Saturday, November 14th from 9:30am to 4:30pm and Falcon Pass Carnival on Saturday, February 6th. The next two meetings will be on November 13th and November 20th. Members need to bring the 6 service hour records to the November meetings or bring them to Mrs. Vitek in room 136. A copy of the 1st nine weeks report card is also due at the November 13th meeting. Elizabeth Selmarten NJHS Correspondent Student Council’s 2nd Annual Holiday Food Drive The SCIS Student Council's 2nd Annual Holiday Food Drive. Last year, SCIS collected over 6000 food items and all were donated to several local churches and community food banks. This year's goal is 7000! The competition among 1st period classes will begin on November 9th through November 20th to see which class can collect the most non-perishable foods. The winning class will receive a pizza party and be announced on Monday, November 30th. Would you like to have each new issue of the Sync Up With Space Center newsletter emailed to you when they are hot off the presses??? Just join the SCIS PTA and you will be added to a mass email list that will receive the newsletter via email. We hope this will lead to a more timely distribution of news as well as being green!
Slide 10: Page 10 Sync Up With Space Center Notes from the Librarian In December we will host author Tim Tingle. He will speak about Native American culture and tribal customs. As a Native American himself and being the author of numerous books on the subject, he is an authority in the field, and we are proud to have him as a speaker in our 7th grade Social Studies classes. On November 20th, I will take 30 lucky students to see the premiere of the movie New Moon. A competition was held in late October to choose the 30 students to go to the film. Twilight series fans have anticipated the release of this movie for some time, and the opportunity to see it on opening day is exciting for all. In October we celebrated Teen Read Week with a different activity in the library each day. We had a great time and I plan to schedule another unofficial Teen Read Week in the spring. Speaking of the spring semester, we will launch the Read It Forward program. You will receive more info on this exciting event after the Winter Break. Mary Kate O’Grady Space Center Intermediate School Librarian The Life of a Seventh Grader By Velocity Brown I walked into school that first morning, and my two best friends screamed my name and gave me a hug. You still have first day of school nerves, I do not think you will ever get over those. Being a 7th grader is like the second hill on a rollercoaster. It is different coming back to SCIS, yet also the same. You know most of the kids in your class and you have the chance to do sports. Unlike in 6th grade when you only knew the people you have known for most of your life. You make new friends and keep the old ones. You can open your locker on the first try. And you still have th language arts twice a day. But when you come back to SCIS as a 7 grader, you kind of know how things work. You know there are 7 periods in a day, you know where most everything is, and you know that your friends and teachers will be there th to welcome you back. But the one thing all of the 7 graders are really looking forward to is…BEING AN 8TH GRADER!!!
Slide 11: Page 11 Sync Up With Space Center Space Center Cardinal Bands Had a Spooktacular October! Minicamps It all started with minicamps for the 7th/8th grade bands on October 2 and 3. Everyone worked hard, played hard, and hit the pizza hard in preparation for District/Regional Tryouts and the first concert of the year. Marching Band Exhibition Cancellation Heavy rain and lightning forced the last-minute cancellation of the CCISD Marching Band Exhibition scheduled for October 12. Everyone was disappointed, but the safety of our students has to come first. Region Band Auditions Victory Lakes Intermediate hosted Region Band tryouts all day on October 17. Space Center requires these auditions for Symphonic Band members, and encourages other students to audition. Band members performed superbly! Among the hundreds of CCISD middle school students who auditioned, the following students qualified for Regional Symphonic, Concert, or District Band. Slide 12: Page 12 Sync Up With Space Center Mark Your Calendars! All those selected for the Region Bands (Symphonic and Concert) will attend an all-day clinic on November 7 at Westbrook Intermediate followed by a performance in the evening! Fall Concert Region auditions completed, it was on to the Fall Concert! October 22 saw all three 7th/8th grade bands assembled in the SCIS commons for a rousing performance in front of a full house. Concert Band performed “Olympia,” “Defender of Time,” and the very timely “Ghosts in the Graveyard.” Mr. Matt Barnhart was showing off with this band, whose tone and timing were impeccable in all three pieces. Next, cheers from students and the audience welcomed back Mr. Stanley Zavala directing the Honors Band who performed “Gates of Orion,” “Castles and Dragons,” and “Dark Fortress.” It is no surprise that several members of this band auditioned for Region, and that two members were recognized! Finally, Symphonic Band under the direction of Mr. Donald McCandless delighted the audience with four pieces designed to showcase the band’s ensembles. Gorgeous brass fanfares and lyrical woodwind passages led up to the closing number, appropriately named, “Into the Clouds.” Our young musicians are indeed flying high! Slide 14: Page 14 Sync Up With Space Center Orchestra Notes The orchestras are hard at work preparing for their upcoming concerts and events. We will be hearing from our Beginning, Philharmonic, Symphony and Chamber orchestras in the coming months. Led by our tireless directors Lisa Black and Jennifer Kidwell, these students are making amazing progress! We rocked the night away at our annual Rock-a-Thon on September 25th. The kids had a blast and raised a lot of money for the spring Mark Woods concert. Mark Wood is an original member of the TransSiberian Orchestra and he will be conducting classes for students district-wide this spring. Check out his website www.electrifyyourstrings.com. This will be an amazing experience for our students. Our advanced students competed for a seat in the Region Orchestra on Saturday, October 24th. These students competed against musicians from Lake Jackson and Pearland in addition to Friendswood and other CCISD schools. On Tuesday, October 20 th the orchestra teamed up with the Theatre department for a magical night. This was an entertaining spoof on our beloved Harry Potter presented by the SCIS Orchestras and Theater Arts Department. It was a “Peter And The Wolf” style production with costumes, lights, actors, and music. This time Harry was much more than a student of magic – he was a student of music. Harry learned about the power of music, how to develop his talent on his Stradivarius 2006 violin, and how to avoid the evil Voldemort who tried to break his strings and foil Harry’s performance during the big contest. Our beginning students showed off their quick and magical progression into the musical world! Children were treated to an early Halloween with candy and treats for all! Slide 15: Page 15 Sync Up With Space Center (Orchestra Notes Concluded) On November 17th you can hear the SCIS Cello Choir performing at Robinson Elementary at the dedication of their new outdoor teaching theatre. The event starts at 6:45. Come out and hear this new group of talented cellists. We are anticipating a trip to the ice rink for some non-musical fun on ice. Look out directors! These kids are much better with a bow than a pair of blades! December brings cooler temperatures (finally!) and our Winter concerts. Our beginning orchestra will show off on December 15th at 7 p.m. in the SCIS Commons. Come see the amazing progress of these new virtuosos. Our orchestra students will be selling beautiful poinsettias during the month so don’t miss out on these beautiful plants. What a nice way to deck your own halls during the holiday season. Also not to be missed is the Sweet Serenade concert on December 11th at 7 p.m. also being held in the SCIS Commons. Come and hear our truly talented advanced orchestras serenade us with holiday tunes. There will be plenty of sweets to go around as our volunteers dish up some yummy desserts provided by our orchestra parents. Slide 16: Page 16 Sync Up With Space Center Space Center Intermediate Boys Athletic Booster Club The Space Center Intermediate Boys Athletic Booster Club is doing a great job of promoting Cardinal Spirit ~ thanks to Merchandise Chair Stacey Neal. Sales of bright red football t-shirts, hoodies, visors, yard signs and decals for all sports have gone so well, we have added more great Cardinal merchandise. * For girls and ladies, we are now selling red Space Center bling (rhinestone) football t-shirts and volleyball shirts with a cardinal outlined in the ball. Basketball shirts will be available soon. Shirts come in junior sizes and women’s sizes small through XXXL. Shirts are $30 each. An order form is available at the school store or you can email Stacey Neal at snealy@comcast.net. We are selling merchandise at home football games and at school during lunch on Wednesdays before games. Be sure to get a game face tattoo, only $1 or $2 for a pair of eyeblacks. The committee is made up of volunteers from the community and will contribute to redrawing attendance zones for some high schools and intermediate campuses.
