Slide 1: Sleeping Disorders Is A Major Problem In The U.S.A. In the United States alone, it is estimated that approximately 60 - 80 million people have some type of sleep disorder. This quantity continues to rise. Several of the explanations for the growing numbers are the growing older of the American population, the change in our life-style and the weight problems epidemic. Of course there are other elements that can result in a sleep problem, such as, stress, shift work, illness or genetics. There are greater than a hundred various kinds of sleep disorders. They range in severity from minor to life threatening. People of any age, from infants to the aged, could be affected by a sleep problem at any time of their lives. As sleep disorders increase in the United States, so do the risks that are related to them. Tiredness can lead to slower mental alertness and a slower reaction time. This could be a very dangerous combination. Between 20 - 25% of all serious vehicular accidents involve a tired driver. Many of these drivers suffer from some form of sleep disorder and may not even be aware of it. A lot of accidents that happen at home or at work are also because of people with some kind of sleeping problem. Sleep problem, combined with the cost of the accidents and sicknesses it causes, results in the American people and the government spending billions of dollars. Lack of sleep is directly related to many physical illnesses and conditions. Individuals that don't get sufficient sleep generally suffer more from headaches, sore joints and stomach problems. Usually a sleep problem is an underlying cause of coronary heart problems, lung conditions and diabetes. Sleep problems may have an effect on the mental well being of people stricken with them. Mood changes, anxiety, eating disorders and depression can result. Many people still don't consider a sleeping problem as a medical problem. Due to this, many never tell their doctor that they are having an issue with sleep. Even if they see their doctor on a regular basis for an illness or condition, they never point out their difficulty sleeping. Because the American public and medical community become more educated and aware of the signs, results and severity of various sleep disorders, an increasing number of cases are being diagnosed. Victims are being handled with treatment, oxygen, cpap machines and even surgery. There are better screening methods and diagnostic assessments which find sleep problem problems earlier. Overnight sleep facilities no longer resemble a hospital room. They are now designed to look more like a hotel room, to make the patient really feel more comfortable. In some cases, as a result of computerization and miniaturization, equipment might be so small that some testing may even be carried out at home. Sleep just isn't an option or a luxury. It's a primary element of living and of good health. If you happen to think you, your partner or your child may be suffering from a sleep disorder see your physician.
