Slide 1: ==== ==== Get more information on dermoid cyst and other types of ovarian cyst at... http://dermoidovariancyst.org ==== ==== A dermoid cyst is a growth that develops when germ cells multiply strangely without fertilization. It can contain all kinds of tissue, namely: skin, hair and teeth. It is also known as benign or mature cystic teratoma and is often small, varying in size from 2 to 6 inches in diameter but could also grow as large as 17 inches. It often grows slowly. Dermoid cysts may be present at birth but often are not noticed until adulthood. They may be found on the lower back, on the face, on the ovaries or in the skull and in a few other places. When these cysts are found in the ovaries are called ovarian dermoid cysts or ovarian neoplasm or ovarian teratoma. They develop from the ovary's germ cells, that is the cells that form eggs and the beginning stages of human tissue. Most women who have an ovarian dermoid cyst have it on only one ovary but in a few cases it occurs on both ovaries. They are common in women between ages 20-40. They are usually benign, that is harmless, but in a few cases they may become malignant, that is cancerous. They do not affect fertility. An ovarian dermoid cyst is formed when skin and skin structures become trapped when the fetus is being developed. They usually do not produce symptoms except when they grow large and rupture. It is also possible for it to torsion or twist the ovary and cause severe pelvic pain. It can also become inflamed. It is dangerous for an ovarian dermoid cyst to rupture because the fluid contained within is thick and sticky, so when it spills its contents into the abdominal cavity it can cause the organs it contacts to adhere together, causing pain. When its contents spill, it can also implant and start growing making it difficult to remove. Computer Tomography (CT) scans or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is used to diagnose ovarian dermoid cyst accurately. Ultrasound images of this kind of cysts are not usually accurate because of the nature of the cyst. Ovarian dermoid cysts are usually left alone except when it torsions, twisting the ovary or becomes inflamed, at which point it then can be removed through surgery using laparoscopy. This involves making small incisions around the belly button and inserting a laparoscope to take out the cyst or laparotomy which involves a larger incision made above the pubic hairline. A doctor may want to watch and wait before deciding to remove the cyst by surgery. When an ovarian cyst is found to be malignant, more common in women above 40, surgery will be performed at once to take out the cyst. If you discover you are exhibiting ovarian cyst symptoms, by all means make an appointment with your gynecologist so that he can confirm the presence, size and type of cyst that you may have. He will likely recommend one of the following: wait and watch, hormone therapy or surgery. What
Slide 2: he probably will not tell you is that there are natural, less invasive methods available to you for the treatment of ovarian cysts. You deserve to know all the facts.
