He or she must know what makes a song tick, where its heart lies. Which space the song gives for your vocal qualities to shine. Breaking the song down yourself makes you an expert and becoming so familiar that when you render the songs it becomes yours. The first thing to understand is the root of 'Do' of a song, then the rhythm, the lyrics, the phrasing. From here on then you can add your own spin to make it your very own. Some Hints About Interpreting 'Do' Key Signatures. As a singer or would be singer, you definitely know the starting note of a song, any song. You know  it is Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do. This is because it is from these that you can reach other notes.How the Do changes depends on the key of the song.If it is Major key Do will be followed by "Major", if it is minor, by "Minor". As an illustration, a key may be C Major, E-flat Major, G Major, etc. Key signature lets you know exactly what scale a song is written in as well as what series of notes you'll be required to sing. At the right of  the clef symbol (treble or bass) is where the Keys Signature is found at the beginning of a musical score. It looks like a group of flat or sharp symbols (but  in the case of C Major, nothing at all). One clue to know that a song is in a minor key is the regular appearance of accidentals, sharp or flat marks. In other words where you see regular appearance of accidentals,sharp or flat marks you should know it is a minor key. No Key Signature:Where there is a blank staff, it is either C major, C minor or A minor.
Slide 2: The Flats Rules When there are more than one flats in a group, the next to the last flat is always the baseline Do. To reiterate, it does not matter how many flats are, they could be 2 or millions, the last flat will always be baseline Do. The baseline  Do in the above example is E. The E could be E major or its relative minor, C minor. However where there is just one flat in the group, Do will always be F. The order of flats in a key signature is usually: B, E, A, D, G, C, F. There are more rules that should be mastered before you can interpret and sing a song as if it is yours but this space will not permit more elaboration.
