Slide 1: Although eReaders have been around for a few years now, they are only now starting to take off and start to slip into the mainstream. Part of this is down to the rapid change in technology found in smart phones such as the iPhone or the new HTC Desire. And then there is the new iPad from Apple, recently launched in the US and soon to be released in the UK. Apple are hoping they can replicate the success of their music and app stores with a new online book store from which iPad users can download eBooks directly to their shiny new gadget. Its worth noting however that such devices, however functional, do not use the same technology as a dedicated eReader. That technology is known as e-Paper and e-Ink. As anyone who has spent much time in front of a computer screen or laptop knows, the display can often lead to tiredness at best, or headaches at worst. For this reason, the very idea of reading books on computers has never really caught on. But the development of e-Ink and e-Paper technology changed all of that, as it is designed to recreate as closely as possible the act of reading an actual book. Unlike a conventional displays which use a backlight to illuminate its pixels, electronic paper reflects light like ordinary paper and is capable of holding text and images indefinitely without drawing power from the battery, while allowing the image to be changed later. e-Paper is considered more comfortable to read than conventional displays. This is due to the noflicker stable image, which does not need to be refreshed constantly, the wider viewing angle, and the fact that it uses reflected ambient light. As a result of this, eReaders can be used even in bright sunshine - because it literally is like reading a book, rather than reading on a screen. The foremost current technology for e-Paper is used in Pixelar e-Readers, and is produced by e-Ink.com. In addition to the technology involved, it simply makes sense to use a device dedicated to purpose of reading books, rather than, say, a smart phone. The display is larger, its software will be designed to make navigation around your collection of books as intuitive as possible, as opposed to fitting in with the generic user interface of another device. The truly great thing about an eReader is the fact that you can carry literally thousands of books with you, wherever you go. So you can dip in and out of anything from novels, journals you may have, or even some comic books. All without having to carry them around, or wish you had taken that other book you had in mind to read if you got the chance. Whilst some eBook stores are cropping up, there are hundreds of out of copyright classics available for free from sites like gutenberg.com. Another big plus in favor of eReaders!
