New York City isn't just the fashion design capital of the U.S., it's a fashion capital for the world--and not just during Olympus Fashion Week. When Anne Klein herself died in 1974, Takihyo Corporation of Japan became the new owner and Karan, together with her former classmate and friend Louis Dell’Ollio, became head designer of the house. In 1984 Donna Karan left Anne Klein and, together with her husband Stephan Weiss and Takihyo Corporation she started her own business to design “modern clothes for modern people". Slide 11: Tokyo
When most of us think of fashion capitals, we think of New York, Paris, and London. They're the most widely shown, and frankly, they are often the most incorporated and inspired in our country. However, this is not quite the case. Tokyo, Japan is one of the largest and most influential fashion capitals of the world. Tokyo's streets are filled with men and women in completely different styles: Punk, Gothic, Old English Gothic, Preppy, Cartoonish fashions, and so on. Tokyo and its fashion are very strong.
Slide 12: Tokyo Designer Yohji Yamamoto
The style he created "suppresses mode with antimode". He expresses his philosophy and avant-guard spirit in his clothing, frequently creating designs far removed from current trends. Basically, he makes a line characterized by oversized silhouettes; it typically features drapes (loose gathers and tatters) in glossy textures that naturally change with the figure's contours and movement. Often, a single color (particularly black) and a single shade are used. One could say that Yohji Yamamoto tries to express himself through his clothing; customers who sympathize with those thoughts and spirit are charmed and become ardent fans.
Slide 13: Tokyo Designer Kenzo
Kenzo's love for fashion developed at an early age, particularly through reading his sisters' magazines. He shortly attended the University of Kobe, where he felt bored and eventually withdrew, against the will of his family . In 1958, he joined a fashion school, Tokyo's Bunka Fashion College, which had then just opened its doors to male students. Kenzo's first designs started because he could only afford to buy his fabrics from flea sales. Most of these fabrics were scraps, the remains of grandmothers sewing baskets. as a result Kenzo had to mix many bold fabrics together to make one garment. And ever since the launching of his first men's line he has become a fashion design prodigy.
