Cut back on the sweets Wait - you thought this article was going to be about working your abs, right? Well, all the crunches in the world won't help you if you've got a gut hanging out over your belt. If you want perfect, six pack abs, you've got to lose some weight first. So cut back on the sweets - the cakes, candies, sodas and processed snacks - and start serving up smaller portions at your meals. Try to eat only until you feel full, not until you're so stuffed that the buttons are popping off your shirt. And, every so often, add a little cardiovascular exercise to your weightlifting routine. You'll see the pounds start to drop off and your abs become more defined. 2. Strengthen your abs If you work out at home, you may find that you can get the results you're looking for with crunches alone - just make sure you're doing them correctly. Use your arms to support your head and neck, but make sure that the lion's share of the work in lifting your torso comes from your abs. If you feel any kind of tension in your neck or shoulders, focus more on engaging the abdominal muscles. If you work out at the gym, you've got access to a huge range of equipment designed to strengthen your abs - just be sure you're using it properly and at a weight that's safe for your strength level. Ask a gym employee or a fellow exerciser for advice if you aren't sure you're doing it right. Don't feel silly - it's a heck of a lot easier to ask for help than to spend several months rehabilitating an injury acquired from pushing too hard. 3. Switch it up occasionally We all know what it's like to get in a rut. Unfortunately, when you let your abs strengthening program become routine, your body gets used to the effort and stops responding to exercise in the same way. So don't just do your 100 crunches before you go to bed - you need to be constantly upping the number of reps you do and incorporating new exercises into your routine to get the results you're looking for. Don't be afraid to change up your routine and keep your body guessing when it's guessing, it's working harder and carrying you more quickly down the road to results.
