This is mainly proven by the fact that a majority of patients that suffer from this condition, which is also known as Morgellons Disease, receive the wrong diagnosis from their doctors. Common diseases that are misdiagnosed include Lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, delusional parasitosis and even attention-deficit disorder (ADD). Because of this issue, patients tend to turn to the Internet to learn more about Morgellons. This has resulted in many patients self-diagnosing their own skin disorders. It wasn't until 2001 that Morgellons disease came about, thanks to a stay at home mother with an academic and professional background in Biology. When Mary Leitao's young son developed symptoms of Morgellons, such as skin lesions with multicolored fibers, numerous doctors refused to believe that this particular case was unique or odd. This led Leitao to create her own foundation for the research of this skin condition and dub it Morgellons, after a similar case discovered by English doctor Sir Thomas Browne. While Browne's cases also exhibited the multicolored fibers on and around the skin lesions of his child patients, it is generally believed that the two cases are not the same. There is currently no specific treatment for Morgellons disease, nor do medical experts readily know what the cause is. This is the main reason why Leitao's foundation as well as the Center for Disease Control has launched their own investigations into conducting research in order to create a list of specific symptoms to make Morgellons easier to diagnose.
