While looking for exercises to strengthen stomach muscles, there are not many. The most common types are the crunches and planks. They come in different variations. Both have more than a dozen variations - some for ease of beginners and some experienced only. Learn both crunches and planks and you are ready for a rocksolid stomach. How to perform basic crunch and its variations Lie down on your back. Keep your hands palms down on your sides. Bend your knees up. Place your feet firmly on the ground. Now raise your shoulders and bring them closer to your knees. Lower your shoulder slowly. This is the basic crunch. One variation is bicycle crunch. You perform a bicycle pedaling motion. You move your knees and elbows simultaneously. This is the best exercise to strengthen your stomach muscles. Reverse crunch has everything similar to the basic crunch, except you raise your buttocks instead of your shoulders. How to perform basic plank and its variations Plank is an exercise, where you attempt to remain motionless on a specific position. The basic crunch has you balancing your weight on your toes and your knees. You keep your spine on a straight line. You give support to your back by pulling on your abs muscles. This is possible by pulling your belly button close to your spine while assuming the plank. There are quite a few variations. One is knee-elbow plank. This is for beginners who can't perform the basic plank. You balance your body on your knee instead of on your toes. Another variation is side plank. You lie on your side to start with and balance your weight on a single hand - placing elbow and fist firmly on the ground. If you are comfortable with these exercises, you can move on to other exercises to strengthen stomach muscles. They are variations of these exercises and they are for experienced persons. You also need the results to show. Although these exercises can strengthen your core, you don't really get beach-ready belly. For that, you have to burn fat.
