Embarking on a new diet? On a health kick? Be aware that one of the biggest failings of people taking up some sort of activity to keep (or get!) fit is a lacking in persistence. We've all done it. It's the New Year and we've had an overindulgent Christmas period - too much turkey, too many mince pies, Christmas cake... day after day, and then suddenly those pants don't fit anymore. Starting a fitness routine is good. A great idea. First though, before you start, let me introduce your best friend - perseverance. When you start any kind of fitness routine, you have all these great intentions. You are eager to get up in the morning and go for that run, or stop off at the gym for an hour on your way home from work. That doesn't last long. Soon you start looking for, and finding, excuses. I can't go for a run because it looks like rain. I'm too busy at work to stop at the gym for 45 minutes. Sound familiar? This is when you need perseverance. You need the drive to keep going with your new routine. There have been scientific studies proving that if you stick with doing something for more than around 17 times, it becomes habit and less of a chore. I sometimes have these kind of motivation problems, but I tell myself it will all be worth it, and have a clear picture of how great I will feel at the end of the session.
