Slide 5: Scientific Writing: Sample Laboratory Report Audience The intended audience is the professor of the class, however the report could be read by any upper-level student or individual in the field of Chemistry. Background/Purpose The document is one of a series of lab reports that was required for the course. Its purpose is to report the process, data, and results of the experiment carried out over the previous week in lab. The format followed the standard style guide format for Chemistry reports with a few adjustments made by the professor. Responsibilities/Description Although I did not carry out the experiment by myself, the preparation of this report was solely my responsibility. A lab partner and myself worked together to complete the physical lab portion, then worked individually to prepare and submit a report. I was responsible for researching the theory of the experiment, analyzing the data, and making reasonable conclusions. I chose this particular lab, because it not only captures the depth of research and understanding required to successfully com-plete a lab report, but it also showcases the type of instrumentation I am familiar with. Challenges/Insight In writing the document I faced the challenge of not being able to analyze the data collected and relate to the theory, because it was difficult to realize correlations at the time. However, with the help of my professor, I became well versed in interpreting and analyzing data from the HPLC.

Slide 10: Scientific Writing: Profession Poster Presentation Audience The audience is basically anyone interested in learning about Chemistry who has a basic, perhaps High School level background in science. Background/Purpose The purpose of the poster is to be informative to a general audience of chemistry students, professors, and professionals. The poster was presented during the poster symposium at the American Chemical Society national meeting in March of 2007, in order to represent/showcase Ferris State University Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society. Responsibilities/Description The research and creation of the poster was solely my undertaking. A visual design student assisted me in converting the original Word document into the PDF format that could be easily printed professionally. Challenges/Insight The task of working on such a extensive and professional poster was very apparent, otherwise the poster developed very smoothly and the end product was impressive.

Slide 12: Academic Writing: Cultural Roots Paper Audience The intended audience is specifically the professor of the course. Background/Purpose The purpose of the assignment was to discover my cultural roots by interviewing various family member and then writing about my findings. Responsibilities/Description This was an individual assignment, so I was solely responsible for writing the report. Because I knew my cultural roots more specifically than my other classmates, the project mostly entailed taking the time to write down what I knew and verifying some facts with secondary sources. Challenges/Insight I don’t feel that I faced any outstanding challenges in completing the assignment. I was a very good experience to write down my thoughts and share my background.

Slide 16: Academic Writing: Positive Image of Chemistry Audience The audience of the first article are experts in the chemical field. The audience for the second article is America general readers, and the audience for the third article is English as a Second Language readers. Background/Purpose The purpose of the assignment was to chose a topic of interest, such as my major, and write an article about it geared toward three different audiences. I was responsible for doing any research necessary and knowing the reading level of each audience. Responsibilities/Description I was solely my responsibility to complete the assignment. I chose to include this piece to showcase my ability in writing for different audiences. Challenges/Insight I did not face any outstanding challenges in completing this project. I learned the importance of always being audience conscious.

Slide 19: Technical Writing: Lactose Intolerance Brochure Audience The intended audience is America general readers, specifically those waiting in a doctor’s office. Background/Purpose The purpose of the assignment is to create an informative and visually appealing document that anyone could read. Responsibilities/Description I was solely responsible for taking the original ineffective document that I chose to transform into a brochure. Challenges/Insight I was challenged in preparing the document because I had to make sure the information was correct and the visual layout appealing and easy to follow.

Slide 22: Technical Writing: Newsletter Writing Audience The intended audience would be the professor of the course, but especially the members of the student organization. Background/Purpose The writing assignment for the course was to create a document containing any topic of interest that allowed me to gain experience on how to use a particular program. The purpose of creating this document was to have a detailed account of the various activities the organization planned and sponsored throughout the year. Responsibilities/Description It was my sole responsibility to collect information and complete the newsletter. Challenges/Insight I did not face any outstanding challenges in completing the document.
