There is also a lot of conflicting information out there about which type of exercise is best for the body and, well, for burning fat. Since exercise and the goals one hope to achieve are different from person to person, it makes sense to evaluate what your fitness goals are. If you are looking to build your endurance for a marathon, high-impact exercise might make the most sense whereas if you are looking to drop a quick ten pounds of added weight, then low- or no-impact exercises would help. High Impact High impact exercises will have an effect on your body. While running a marathon to lose weight is probably overkill, running a marathon as training for the Boston marathon would make sense. But even so, expect your body to require a bit of time to recover. While you will definitely burn considerable calories during your run, understand that in running you are essentially training your body for endurance. In most cases, you cannot isolate specific areas of focus, meaning your entire body will feel the gain (and pain) of high-impact exercises. Eventually, your body will adapt to the running and you will not longer feel the pain associated with a long-distance run. This simply means you will have to run farther or adjust your routine in order to reap the rewards. Low or No Impact Low- or no-impact exercises are ideal when you are looking to lose weight. These exercises normally do not leave your body starving for recovery, which means you can wake up the next morning and hit the gym yet again. As well, low- or no-impact exercises can be isolated to specific areas of focus. If you want to target your hamstrings and lower body, you might want to step on a stairmill; upper body, a rowing machine, and so forth. This does not mean that your body will not adapt to the exercises; it will. But there is a greater variety of low and no impact exercises allowing you to keep your cardiovascular routines fresh and new. Ultimately, both forms of exercise are beneficial. But you need to know what the purpose of your workout is. For most people, the purpose is either to increase endurance or to burn fat. If you want to increase endurance for a rowing competition, then you will use a rowing machine whether it is low- or no-impact or not. If, however, you want to turn your muscle into lean muscle, then isolating specific areas of your body through a low- or no-impact cardio machine usually makes the most sense.
