Fad diets certainly sell magazines, but are they safe or effective? In answering this question we need to first define what a fad diet actually is. A fad diet is just a diet that gains sudden popularity before falling out of favour, usually just as quickly. It is generally used as a negative term and thrown at anything that strays from the established "food pyramid" diet. But really the number of diets that the term is applied to is so broad that it is impossible to make a sweeping statement like "fad diets don't work". The truth is some will, some won't, some are pretty sensible and some are downright dangerous.I remember back in my teens when I decided to take control of my diet. I wanted to maximise the results of my exercise program and really transform my body. I began to research the area of diet and quickly realised that there is a massive amount of information out there,there are so many methods and a lot of them seems to contradict each other. I soon found myself with a case of "paralysis by analysis". Faced with so many options I became overwhelmed and ended up stuck, rather than taking action I kept researching as if the next diet or nutritional habit I uncovered would be the key to fast weight loss. The fact is there are many methods and many of them will work, and a good plan done right now and followed to the letter is better than a perfect plan 2 years from now!That said, the question is not "do fad diets work?", but "what common elements do the most effective diets share?". If you recognise these elements you will be able to decide for yourself which diets work.Effective diet element number 1You need to create a calorie deficit. Obvious isn't it? Yes, to lose weight you need to consume less calories than you use each day. This is true now, has always been true and will always be true. There is not really any debate about this in the diet world, but there is some disagreement on whether or not it is necessary to count calories. In my experience when a client is very overweight I find simply having them switch to healthier foods will cause weight loss. However, if you are serious about results then a period of calorie counting can make the difference between good and great. This is why a diet with a calorie counter and diet generator makes life a hell of a lot easier. Effective diet element number 2 - The diet needs to be realistic. Again, not exactly rocket science, but the easier you make it to follow your chosen diet the better your results are going to be. Look, if you want to lose weight fast, eat every two hours and only eat fish and broccoli. That will get you ripped in no time! However, I suspect you won't last any longer than 2 days!For a diet to be effective it needs to be something you can follow for the rest of your life, and should involve a variety of foods to keep you interested. So a maple syrup diet or whatever the next fad diet is will not cut it. A diet that provides you with a sample shopping list and a large variety of food combinations is recommended. This way it becomes less like a diet and more about a new way of
Slide 2: life which you can maintain for life.I also tend to recommend a 10% margin for error in your diet where you are allowed to go off plan and eat something less than ideal. 10% is not enough to detract from your results, but it will keep you sane and motivated to eat well throughout the rest of the week. Just remember; 10% is 10%! That means if you have 4 meals a day, you are allowed 3 meals a week that are less than ideal, any more than that and you are not being compliant to your diet and will get poor results!Effective diet element number 3 - If it looks unhealthy and makes ridiculous claims, guess what? We have all seen the really out-there diets that we're told celebrities use to lose weight. Some of them may be true, some may be lies. But what is true is that a celebrity who makes millions of dollars from their looks and can afford to have meals cooked for them and to be trained every day, is in a slightly different position from you who has not got these resources at your disposal. The point here is ; stop looking for the magic bullet and commit to a solid nutrition and training plan . Start today, commit to it for a month at least and start getting results now.So in summary, do fad diets work? I feel that if you think of something as a fad diet, you are by definition looking for a short term solution.
