Slide 1: Tuttle, Brooke Mrs. Maples-Saus Wright State University SOC 200-09 “Teen Pregnancy: A Social Problem” 11/7/11
Slide 2: AGE: 20 CHILD BORN: Aug. 2011 “A sexually active teen who does not use a contraceptive has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year.” - Guttmacher Institute 11/7/11
Slide 3: The woman in the picture is someone I have known since the age of nine. She was on the Depo shot, a form of contraceptive, for a long while. Almost immediately after not receiving her birth control, she became pregnant. 11/7/11
Slide 4: AGE: 16 CHILD BORN: July 2011 “Each year, almost 750,000 U.S. Women aged 1519 become pregnant.” - Guttmacher Institute 11/7/11
Slide 5: This young woman and her partner are both sixteen; she is also my cousin. Teen pregnancy impacts everyone, even those family members you’re not the closest to. 11/7/11
Slide 6: AGE: 19 CHILD BORN: Sep. 2010 “Two thirds of all teen pregnancies occur among 1819 year olds.” -Guttmacher Institute 11/7/11
Slide 7: I have been friends with this young woman since middle school; she found out she was pregnant around Christmas time in 2009, when she was 18, getting ready to turn nineteen. Statistics like the ones on the prior slide show that most teens are getting pregnant at this age. 11/7/11
Slide 8: AGE: 18 CHILD BORN: July 2009 “Eighty-two percent of teen pregnancies are unplanned; they account for about one-fifth of all unintended pregnancies annually.” 11/7/11
Slide 9: This is my best friend in the entire world. We’ve been friends for ten years, and I supported her when she became pregnant. My precious goddaughter certainly was not planned, just like the thousands of other children born to teen mothers in the United States. 11/7/11
Slide 10: AGE: 20 CHILD BORN: Sep. 2010 “Most births to teen mothers are first births.” – Guttmacher Institute 11/7/11
Slide 11: I have known this young lady since middle school as well. Her son is her first and only child, as she plans to not have any more for a while, if ever again. 11/7/11
Slide 12: AGE: 20 CHILDREN BORN: 2007, 2009 “Nineteen percent are second or higher order births.” – Guttmacher Institute 11/7/11
Slide 13: However, like this young woman who graduated with us, there are girls who are our age and have two or more children, all born while we were in high school. 11/7/11
Slide 14: AGE: 20 CHILDREN BORN: 2008, 2010 Black women in Ohio have the highest pregnancy and abortion rates with 131 pregnancies per 1,000 women and 36 abortions per 1,000 women. - Guttmacher Institute 11/7/11
Slide 15: I have known this woman since I was five years old. She is African-American, and she not only has the one child pictured previously, but also a lovely daughter to join the mix. 11/7/11
Slide 16: AGE: 19 CHILD BORN: July 2010 “Most teens believe it is OK for ‘an unmarried female to have a child’.” - Todd Melby 11/7/11
Slide 17: I’ve been really close friends with this young woman since I was five years old. She is a young, single mother, and she is fine with that. One of the problems with today’s society regarding teen pregnancy is that some teens, like my friend, seem to take it lightly. 11/7/11
Slide 18: REDUCED EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT “Teen mothers are substantially less likely…to complete high school or obtain a G.E.D. by age 22. Fewer than 2% of teens who have a baby before age 11/7/11
Slide 19: This picture is from my high school graduation. The young woman here was fortunate enough to graduate befor e getting pregnant, but that is not the case for most girls who get pregnant while they are actually in high school. 11/7/11
Slide 20: These women are all friends, family, and schoolmates whom I have known for years. Teen pregnancy isn’t just an issue that can be talked about; it is an issue that is being 11/7/11 experienced every day. I can attest that its not a sudden
