Slide 1: Love And Marriage By: Krista Cavestany, Maribeth Reyes, and Cory Scott
Slide 2: Themes ife never goes exactly as planned. here can be wishful thinking, but in he long run people have little power ver the way love works (or doesn't ork.) anie's experiences with the elationships in her life is what aused her understanding of love and ife in general to grow and change.
Slide 3: DESCRIPTIVE Janie discovers a pear tree while in her teens, discovering sexuality: "She saw a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister-calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. So this was a marriage! She had been summoned to behold a revelation. Then Janie felt a pain remorseless sweet that left her limp and languid" (11). WRITING EXAMPLE
Slide 4: SANCTUM n. A sacred or holy place; An inviolably private place or retreat Holy, Safe, Haven LOVE EMBRACE Love -- n. A profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person; Sexual passion or desire; Sexual intercourse Embrace -- v. Hug; To take gladly or eagerly; To include or contain Tender, Passionate, Sexual Happiness, Acceptance
Slide 5: ECSTATIC SHIVER Ecstatic -- adj. Feeling great rapture or delight Shiver -- v. To shake or tremble with cold, fear, excitement, etc.; n. A tremulous motion Orgasm SUMMON v. To call upon to do something specified; To call or notify to appear at a specified place; Call forth Purpose, Duty REVELATION n. The act of revealing; Disclosure; Something revealed or disclosed; (Theology) God's disclosure of Himself and His will to His creatures; Something that contains such disclosure; Revelations -- the last book in the Bible Realization, Clarity, Apocalypse
Slide 6: The use of "sanctum" to describe the bloom identifies the pollination as a metaphor for marriage and also identifies marriage as private and sacred. A church is commenly regarded as a safe and holy retreat -- a sanctum. Two people joining under the eye of God in a church is regarded as a marriage. Because of this, the joining of bee and calyx in a bloom (sanctum) can be reasonably perceived as an analogy between marriage and the pollination of a pear blossom. And also, because these events take place somewhere private and sacred, they, too, can be read as private and sacred, as well.
Slide 7: hat the sister-calyxes' response to the bee's pollination is described as "love embrace" illustrates love, marriage, and sex as ender, passionate, happy, nd accepting gestures. his is due to the mplications of "love" and embrace" and the way in which it applies to the pear tree metaphor for omantic relations. he implied meaning of "ecstatic shiver" in this quote can definitely be nderstood as an orgasm; the use of this phrase to describe the ovement of the tree during pollination expresses the idea that sexual leasure and beneficial relationships go hand-in-hand. As this is so, the sexual quality of true love and a healthy marriage is stablished.
Slide 8: That the metaphoric marriage that Janie witnesses is referred to as a "revelation" denotes that with marriage comes realization, clarity, and drastic change. By definition and association, revelation includes realization and clarity. But a religious definition of "revelation" calls it God's disclosure. Because this is so, the holiness of marriage is amplified. The last book of the Bible is also titled "Revelations" and it contains stories of the Apocalypse, which is, in essence, a drastic change -- and one in which all is revealed. As this is so, there's not only a spiritual implication, but also an implication that with the change caused by marriage one will learn. *This is an example of the way in which understanding follows experience.
Slide 9: The place at which Janie lived with Logan is described as, "a lonesome place like a stump in the middle of the woods where nobody had ever been. The house was absent of flavor, too" (21-22). Logan Killicks That the home in which Janie and Logan lived in is described as such illustrates a feeling of isolation and boredom through the use of imagery.
Slide 10: Throughout the book, there's a running comparison of sexuality and marriage to a tree. Because of this, the reference to the stump in the middle of the woods in the description can be interpreted as a metaphor for Janie and Logan's sex life and marriage. This stump is: Incomplete Dead Lonely Unvisited Flavorless
Slide 11: Therefore, their relationship is boring and they're alienated from each other -- it isn't at all fulfilling. Janie planned on eventually loving Logan, but that isn't so. *This is an example of how things don't always go according to plan.
Slide 12: Joe Starks As Janie leaves Logan in favor of Joe, she decides that, "she was going to have flower dust and springtime sprinkled over everything. A bee for her bloom." (32)
Slide 13: This is Janie's idea of what her marriage with Joe would be like the day she ran off with him, however this image stayed for only a short amount of time. Janie had only known Joe for a few weeks at this time; the hope she immediately had in him demonstrates what she believed was true about love and marriage at the time.
Slide 14: While Janie could not get Tea Cake off her mind she was thinking about how he was different from other men and how, "He could be a bee to a blossom a pear tree blossom in the spring" (106). ergible "Tea Cake" Woods
Slide 15: The fact that Janie metaphorically sees Tea Cake as a bee to a blossom illustrates how well she feels Tea Cake is meant for her because no one else has been able to fulfill her dream of having a marriage consisting of true love, sex, and happiness. The idea of a blossom in the spring foreshadows the creation of a new romance between Janie and Tea Cake.
Slide 16: Jane and Tea Cake's relationship was totally unplanned and its spontaneity, unlike that of her prior marriages, made up a successful marriage. *Because this is so, it serves as an example of things not going according to plan.
Slide 17: Janie learns that, "marriage did not make love" and because her "first dream was dead" she "[becomes] a woman" (25).
Slide 18: That Janie learns and becomes in this way demonstrates her development throughout the story. By acknowledging that "marriage did not make love" and changing accordingly she shows signs of her thoughts on love maturing and, in turn, the actions she takes in regard to love and marriage are more mature, as well. There's also an indication that -- at the time, at least -Janie starts to fit under the stereotype concerning women and how they deal with their dreams (1). She has qualms about being with Logan because he doesn't align with her idea of true love and to deal with this she "[becomes] a woman". Because this quote refers to changing a dream and becoming a woman, it can be inferred that it's referring to the story's take on women and dreams.
Slide 19: *Since this maturation is the result of Janie gaining insight by undergoing a relationship, it is a prime example of the way in which understanding follows experience.
Slide 20: As Janie continues her story to Pheoby, she expresses love to be "lak de sea. It's uh movin' thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from de shore it meets, and it's different with every shore" (191).
Slide 21: That Janie perceives love in this way illustrates the paradox of love being constantly different, yet universal. The phrase "takes it shape from de shore" implies the flexibility of love. Love is constant while maintaining a consistent twist as it is felt in different people. The background/character of a person defines the "shore" -- how the love will appear to one. *This is the ultimate knowledge that Janie gains through her relationship experiences.
