Slide 1: Infectious disease 3 AIDS
Slide 2: Transmission • Caused by human immunodeficiency virus • Spread by semen and vaginal fluids during intercourse • Spread by infected blood products • Spread by contaminated needles • Mother to fetus across placenta • Mother to baby via breast milk • Dies quickly when outside human body
Slide 3: Action and symptoms • Can take up to 10 years to show up • Acts on T helper lymphocytes – immune system • Macrophages • Brain cells • Symptoms of HIV – maybe flu like initially then no symptoms • AIDS – opportunistic eg pneumonia, TB cancers (Kaposi’s sarcoma)
Slide 4: Diagnosis • Blood test for HIV antibodies
Slide 5: History • Initially spread in Europe and North America through homosexuals with many partners, anal sex • Rectal lining is not as thick as vaginal lining so tears easily so virus passes from semen to blood
Slide 6: Worldwide importance • • • • • • Every country is affected (pandemic) Very serious in Africa Eg 3.5m infected with HIV in 2002 In Zimbabwe 25% of population HIV+ Devastating effect on African economy because People affected mainly 20-40 years old – main workforce • Already small funds have to be spent on treatment so little left for other development
Slide 7: Prevention and control • No cure for AIDS • Rapid mutation of HIV makes finding vaccine hard • AIDS is Human – could not test on animals very easily • Currently available – drugs which inhibit HIV action, used in combination with each other • Treatments for opportunistic AIDS infections
Slide 8: Drug therapy • Very effective • Unpleasant side effects eg headaches, diarrhoea and nerve damage
Slide 9: Prevention better than cure • Advising HIV positive mothers not to breastfeed • Contact tracing • Education • Needle exchange schemes • Screening of blood donors • HIV testing readily available • Using condoms
