==== ==== By Hollie E. Townsend It is a beautiful, cool day in late December, Christmas is over, and you have just boarded a plane heading for New Orleans. You are looking forward to catching the after-Christmas sales, some sightseeing, and visiting your family. You especially want to see your relatives before they all go home. You look around and notice that every seat is full. College students talk about their plans for the remainder of semester break. Business executives talk about their plans for the coming year. You are happy and excited to be seeing your family. You smile in eager anticipation. Your happiness quickly turns to worry, however, when you notice that the pilot appears to be drowsy. You say a silent prayer. Many pilots work long hours. Because of the long hours, they get tired. If they fall asleep at the control panel, the plane may crash. If the plane crashes, people will be killed, grandparents will not get to see their grandchildren graduate, and executives will not make it to their meetings. People are depending on the pilot to get them to their destination safely. Because pilot fatigue is a cause of crashes, pilots are now being required to take longer rest breaks. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) now says that pilots can fly up to nine hours. They must get a minimum of ten hours of rest between flights. Now, crashes will be less likely. People can travel by plane and go where they need to go. During their flight, they can relax rather then worry. One passenger might be writing a short story, for instance. He will likely spend the flight with a computer on his lap, working out characters, plot, settings, and dialogue. He will type away on his masterpiece, grateful that he has a laptop computer rather than a spiral notebook and pen, and dream of the day when he finally gets paid for his story. Another passenger may be en route to a game show audition and will spend the flight studying flash cards that he has brought with him. He is hoping to pay his debts and fulfill a lifelong dream. He envisions the lights shining upon him, the cameras portraying him as a confident, brilliant contestant, and the audience, watching and waiting to see how he will do. Two hearing-impaired passengers sit just behind you. You have a very limited knowledge of sign language, but as you watch them, you can tell that they are very happy and excited about something. You breathe a sigh of relief and settle in for the rest of the flight.
