Until a couple of months ago, I, myself, had never heard of him. Tyler Perry is an African-American comedic writer whose work you should get to know for your own health. His first movie was Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I saw it on the video store shelf for many months before I rented it. Now I know what I was missing. This is an inspiring movie of a woman married to a successful lawyer who suddenly decides after 18 years he no longer wants to be married and throws his wife out of the house in the middle of the night with just her clothes and no money.    The hero in the movie, who is one of the characters who helps the wife, Helen, redeem her selfesteem, is the character Tyler Perry's name is most associated with, Madea. Madea is a controversial 68-year-old 6-foot tall pistol-packin' tough love grandmother. Helen is played by Kimberly Elise who gives a career skyrocketing, moving performance that had me in tears. This woman knows how to show pain.   In addition to Diary, five plays by Tyler Perry have also been released on DVD. After watching Diary and getting a taste of Madea, I immediately rented all of Tyler Perry's videos, including Diary of a Mad Black Woman, the play, Madea's Family Reunion, Madea's Class Reunion, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, and Meet the Browns (which doesn't have Madea in it).    I have since watched each video over and over again, and I still laugh every time. What makes Tyler's Madea so lovable? Most African-Americans can relate to Madea because they knew a "Madea" growing up. There was a grandmother named Madea who lived in a big house on the corner of my neighborhood, and everyone knew her.    It's not just Madea that makes Mr. Perry's plays and movie irresistible, it is also the powerhouse singing, interesting stories featuring problems many people identify with, such as sexual abuse, drug addiction, men who have been incarcerated trying to clean up their lives, etc.    Another reason African-Americans are drawn to Tyler's plays is that he weaves multiple powerful lessons into them to help people suffering from or with relatives who have the obstacles featured in his movies.   I'm a firm believer that laughter heals the body and the mind, and keeps you healthy. Any activity, such as laughter, that releases endorphins in the body helps you live a longer life. This is why I recommend Tyler Perry's plays and movies. Now that the movie version of Family Reunion is out, I encourage you to go see it and support Tyler. And, yes, there will be people yelling at the screen in the theater, so don't be surprised.
Slide 2:   The movie version of Madea's Family Reunion features excellent performances by actors such as the legendary Cicely Tyson. She was also in Diary of a Mad Black Woman, the Movie. Although most of his plays feature actors who are not well known, Tyler's movies so far have always had very well-known actors and memorable performances. In addition, they're practically guaranteed to get some laughs out of you and the rest of the family.   One thing I've noticed is an increasing number of Madea look-a-like characters in movies, such as Big Momma. You know something is successful when you see knock-offs come along.    Before you see the imitations, go see the real deal.
