Two separate solar systems are available commercially for private home installation, usually on rooftops. First, solar hot water systems have been available for at least 30 years. Second, households are increasingly installing home solar electricity with battery backup systems to power their homes. It is important to be clear that solar hot water systems do not generate electricity. Home solar electricity systems, even those with battery backup, usually also connect to the public electricity grid. Grid-connected systems ensure the household always has electricity available. Naturally, having solar panels as the prime generators of electricity and batteries to electricity that is excess to the needs of the household during daylight hours when the solar system is operating, will minimize the amount of electricity the household ever draws from the public grid. In some regions, governments have established programs that allow excess electricity produced by a solar household to be sold into the public electricity grid. This so-called net metering system has several benefits. First, it helps the household recover the capital cost of its solar powered or photovoltaic electricity system. Secondly, from a public benefit perspective, it helps decrease the need to install additional electricity capacity that uses high carbon-emitting fossil fuels. Some photovoltaic or solar power systems are equipped with a battery bank that accepts unused electricity and stores it for later use by the household. This battery backup effectively allows a household to save unissued electricity generated during the day for consumption during the night. Home photovoltaic systems can usually generate 1.5 kilowatts (Kw) to 10 Kw of power. For example, a 5 KW system can flow 5,000 watts of power at any one instant of time, enough to power 50 light bulbs rated at 100W each. Home solar electricity with battery backup systems installed on home rooftops typically have a generating capacity ranging from 1.5 kilowatts (KW) to 10 KW. For example, a 5 KW system has the ability to flow 5,000 watts of power, sufficient to power 50 light bulbs rated at 100W each. As another example, a small two-strip electric heater typically has a power consumption of 1 KW. So a 5 KW solar system will power 5 of those heaters.
