Slide 3: Theory and Theorist
Orem has cited works from Linda Richards and Florence Nightingale to define nursing. Although her definition is similar to Virginia Henderson’s, Orem states that her definition of nursing is from her own experiences and observations (Hartweg).

Slide 4: Theory Overview
Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing defines what nursing is and when nursing care is necessary. Orem’s central idea for Self-Care Deficit is: “People can benefit from nursing because they are subject to healthrelated or health-derived limitations that render them incapable of continuous self-care or dependent care that result in ineffective or incomplete care” (Orem). 6/19/10
Slide 5: Theory Overview
There are six major concepts Orem used in Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing
› Self-care › Self-care agency › Therapeutic self-care demand › Self-care deficit › Nursing agency › Nursing systems

Slide 6: Theory Overview
Assumptions; Orem developed five assumptions for her theory. The five assumptions describe characteristics of self care in human beings and behaviors to sustain life. Propositions; Orem had described six propositions for Theory of Self-Care Deficit, six for Theory of Self-Care (Dependent-Care), and eight for Theory of Nursing Systems. 6/19/10
Slide 7: Theory Overview
Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing is an amalgamation of three interrelated theories.
› Theory of Self-Care Deficit › Theory of Self-Care › Theory of Nursing Systems

Slide 8: Analysis and Evaluation Of Theory
I. Internal Criticism
› Adequacy-Theory addresses self-care and
relationship to nursing thoroughly. Can use more research on self-care and children.
› Clarity- Nursing theory uses easy to
understand terms. Some difficult terminology, but is defined in theory and used consistently.
› Consistency- Is consistent through out theory
and defines concepts.

Slide 9: Analysis and Evaluation of Theory
› Logical Development- This theory develops
logically as it unfolds.
› Level of Theory Development- Grand theory,
although Orem describes it as a general theory.
II. External Criticism:
Complexity- There are six concepts to this theory which are written in simple terms.

Slide 10: Analysis and Evaluation of Theory
› Discrimination- Orem’s theory differs from
other nursing theories due to the self-care concepts.
› Reality Convergence- This theory is based in
reality and can be used in nursing practice as well as curriculum development.
› Pragmatic- This theory defines when nursing
care is necessary, it aids in developing care plans and interventions.
› Scope- Broad scope, grand theory that

Slide 11: Analysis and Evaluation of Theory
› Significance- Research covers many areas of
nursing care as well as curriculum.
› Utility- This theory has generated many
hypothesis that have been researched and published throughout the years.

Slide 12: Practice Problem
There is a growing problem throughout the United States as well as all over the world with obesity in children. More young children are being diagnosed with Type II diabetes as well as high cholesterol, and heart disease. My school district has identified children with BMI’s greater that 95 to participate in an extra gym class as well as educating them about nutrition. Since the program
