Slide 1: ==== ==== For free videos and the latest information about narcolepsy, please visit our site http://blogs4u.biz/narcolepsy/ ==== ==== Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes sleepiness and frequent sleep attacks at daytime. It happens at any time, no matter what you're doing. Because of this, the symptoms frequently cause embarrassment, social isolation and depression on a person. It can truly impede on the family, school or work life. But narcoleptics need not go through with this terrible ordeal. Through a few lifestyle adjustments, you can learn to adapt and make positive changes in your life. Here are the best ways to cope with Narcolepsy symptoms. Practice Good Quality Nighttime Sleep. A good nighttime sleep can help control the symptoms of narcolepsy. To promote good sleep, keep your bedroom quiet, dark and comfortable. Take away all the distractions in your room, like a TV, radio or a computer. Before going to sleep, do something relaxing. You can drink warm milk, or take a warm bath. Narcolepsy can sometimes cause you to awaken several times at night. If this happens, allow yourself about 20 minutes to fall back asleep. If you still can't fall asleep, get up and do something relaxing, like reading, until you get sleepy. Establish a regular sleep schedule as well. You should go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday. Take Daytime Naps. You should include regular naps into your daytime schedule. Take two to three brief, scheduled naps for about 10-15 minutes each. It can help control excessive daytime sleepiness. This is because planned naps can prevent unplanned sleep attacks. For narcoleptics who are working, negotiate with your employers to allow for scheduled naps during a regular workday. Exercise Regularly. You should do regular exercise at daytime. You can take several short walks during the day. By exercising, you can develop strength, endurance and improvement of metabolism. These will help your body combat sleepiness and get better nighttime sleep. Exercising can also help you control your weight. Excessive weight may worsen your narcolepsy symptoms.
Slide 2: Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Nicotine. Caffeine and nicotine have a stimulating effect. They can keep you from falling asleep whenever you need it. So it is best to avoid these for several hours before sleeping at night or napping. Alcohol, meanwhile, is a depressant. It can relax the body and helps you fall asleep. However, it is a false sleep aid because it prevents restful sleep. So it is also a good idea to avoid drinking alcoholic drinks a few hours before bedtime or nap time. Modify your Diet. A poor diet can worsen the narcolepsy symptoms and make it more frequent. For narcoleptics, it is highly recommended that they eat foods high in protein and complex carbohydrates. This is because it can bring a slower rise of energy that is longer-lasting. Meanwhile, foods high in simple carbohydrates should be avoided. It brings a sudden rise in energy that is just easily lost. It is also best to eat small frequent feedings, rather than the usual 3 large meals per day. You should also avoid large meals and beverages just before bedtime. However, consult your physician first before making any abrupt or huge changes in your diet. Follow a Regular Schedule of Work and Activities. Narcoleptics need to establish regularity in their lives to compensate for its loss due to sudden sleep attacks. Follow a regular schedule of waking and sleeping, taking medications, eating and exercising. Daily tasks like working, shopping, cleaning, etc. should be scheduled on times that you feel most alert. Infrequent events like family outings or doctor's visits need extra planning. Seek Help. It is helpful for narcoleptics and family members to get educational counseling. Support groups can also be vital to help narcoleptics understand that they are not alone. They can share stories, coping mechanisms and feel acceptance in the group. There is no cure yet for narcolepsy. But these lifestyle modifications, along with medications, can help narcoleptics get their life back.
