Slide 1: Palm Pre's new little Brother, The Pixi “David Novak (The GadgetGUY) is a syndicated columnist who reviews and features the latest in consumer technology. For cutting-edge information on what’s hot and what’s new in gadgets and gizmos , The GadgetGUY has his pulse on everything related to computers, camcorders, car tech, cameras, gaming, GPS devices, networking, TVs, software, wireless devices, media players, hi-fi, wifi, cell phones, home appliances, sports science, power tools and more. The Palm Pixi, the little brother of Palm Pre, will debut on November 15 on Sprint's Network. The $100 Pixi is a sort-of-stripped-down Pre with a few minor changes, including a front-line keyboard , a slightly smaller display, a new Facebook application, and sadly- no WiFi. The Pixi is targeted at younger users with more social networking features. Having said that, it's curious why Palm left out Wi-Fi with this new device. It seems to me that Wi-Fi is a natural fit for youngsters, maybe even more needed for this group than for the business user. After all, teens and 20somethings are Wi-Fi junkies. Still though, the Pixi presents a extremely cool form factor, redefining portability in what I think will be a very powerful smartphone. The Pre is a state-of-the-art capable phone, doing several things that other smartphones can't do. The Pixi is essentially the same phone, much like it's predecessors, the Treo and Centro. Both of those phones were nearly identical, but were marketed as a busines-user phone and a teen-phone respectively. The Pre/Pixi line-up seems to be marketed the same way. But don't be fooled. The Pixi has a lot of horsepower behind a wafer-thin device. I'm excited to see this new phone, and if you're in a Sprint market with high-speed data, you won't miss Wi-Fi.
