Many of us do, however most of us do not appreciate the importance of choosing the right IRA, and choosing the right IRA custodian. Choose a self directed IRA, custodian who allows you to invest profitably and the right investment vehicle and you're well on your way to a comfortable retirement. Lets have a look at IRAs, self directed IRAs and what a self directed IRA custodian does to get a better understanding of why self directed IRA investments are the most likely to succeed in setting you up for a comfortable retirement. So how do you avoid low returns from traditional IRAs that use traditional IRA custodians like banks, and invest in low return investments? You set up a self directed IRA that allows you to invest your own funds, and choose a self directed IRA custodian that acts on your direction. It's perfectly legal to set up a self directed IRA, where you control the investments. You must still select a custodian, all IRAs must have a custodian to hold the assetts and administer the fund, but once you've done so you direct your own investments and your custodian acts at your direction. Many traditional IRA custodians do not accept self directed IRAs because they want to direct where the funds are invested. But there are custodians who do accept self managed IRAs, and as

So what you need to do is to set up your own self managed IRA and find a reputable reliable self directed IRA custodian to act as your custodian. Usually these are reputable trust companies. There are much fewer custodians for self directed IRAs available than traditional custodians for traditional IRAs. However they can be found. And once you've found your self directed IRA custodian you can then get on with the job of investing your own retirement funds in less traditional forms of investment that usually produce much better returns. Like real estate. Yes with a self directed IRA you're perfectly able to invest your retirement funds in real estate, about the best long term investment around, even in the current market.
