Slide 1: Transformers can generate electricity Can you ever imagine life without electricity? You would have noticed that if you don’t have current at your home even for 10 minutes you would feel uncomfortable. But now you don’t have to face that problem as every apartment or office now has a separate transformer. Transformer helps in producing electricity for refrigerator, lights, air conditioner and other electrical equipments. Do switch off lights when not in use. Save electricity, save earth. Transformers are used to transform electricity from one voltage to another by using the magnetic induction. It has an iron core with a hollow square shape. Connected to the core on opposite sides are two coils of wire. If these coils are wrapped up around the core an equal number of times, then the voltage in the second circuit will be the same as the first or primary circuit. Transformers usually employ alternating current. If you notice most of the transformers have air between two coils, but they can work equally well with water. Current transformers are used in every electronic device. You have to work with transformers everyday while using a laptop or using a digital camera, it is used in various electronic devices. All the transformers are approximately built the same. The important part of a transformer is the magnetic coil that transforms AC current into DC current. DC current flows in only one direction. Direct current is also known as galvanic current. AC current stands for alternating current and is used in homes and businesses. Electrical transformer can change alternating current (AC) voltage or electric current from one level to another. Step up transformers increase voltage and decrease current for many applications including power supplies for electronic appliances. Step down transformers decrease voltage but increase current. The transformer outside your house connected to the power lines drop the voltage to 220, but provides higher current to operate your appliances. Electric transformers are more effective than before. Not it is possible to transfer power in a timely, efficient and in a more economical manner. Since people don’t like to live close to power plant, there is the added benefit of making it possible for homes and businesses that are quite a distance from power plants to obtain dependable, affordable electricity. The electricity that reaches our home today has to pass through many electrical transformers before it reaches users. If you notice, power has a formula. Power is equal to voltage times current. Transformers can never increase power. If their voltage is increased, current decreases and if they decrease voltage the current increases. Chargers that are used for cell phone and camera have electric transformers to reduce the voltage from your wall socket to a lower level.
