Although it is unfair to stereotype a wonderful city as such, there is a grain of truth in the above statement. Dubai can be audaciously expensive for the frugal traveler on a budget. The luxury malls, huge hotels that charge thousands of dollars per night, to the expensive gourmet cuisine, without ample cash, Dubai can be a daunting experience. No wonder some of the wealthiest people in the world live in this city. However, cost does not have to rob you of the experience of a lifetime. Despite what people may tell you, it is quite possible to find cheap hotels in this city (the frugal travelers have a right to travel too, after all). Although they may not be as flashy as the Burj Dubai, there are plenty of cheap hotels in Dubai, provided you know where to look. The trick is to check out multiple hotels before you decide on one. The inner city is the perfect place to start your search. The hotels here cater to visiting relatives of Dubai's large population of migrant workers and you can usually find something that is 'backpacker-worthy'. For a better experience (and view), check out the Dubai business and shopping district. A few hotels here (notably, the Highland Hotel) have quite cheap rates with amazing views of the Arabian sea - perfect for the 'coast conscious' traveler. Another great place to check out for cheap hotels is the shopping district of Al Fahidi street. This area of the historic street bazaars (notably, Meena Bazaar) has quite a few cheap hotels. Remember the key is to hunt around. You don't want your Dubai stay to be spoiled by a bad or an extraordinarily expensive hotel. Just because you have seen it on TV doesn't mean that there are no cheap hotels in Dubai - all it takes is some patience to find them. Dubai is a wonderful place to spend a week exploring an exotic culture immersed in tradition while still being very modern.
