Slide 12: Internet Predators & Pornography • • Pornography is the #1 best money making business on the Internet. It is a $4-$10 billion dollar industry. As a result, the company is sneaky about targeting kids. Here are some of the techniques they use: – 1. The Pornography companies target kids by putting provocative ads on gaming websites – 2. They install spyware and Adware that you get when you go to gaming or Free ad-supported websites. The spyware then begins to put ads on your computer screen which can have porn. – 3. When a company stops paying for a website, the Porn Industry will buy that website hoping you had a link to it or visit it by mistake. This happened to one teacher who had a good writing website for 4th grade. – 4. Some other tactics are changing the home page or installing sex software on your computer without your permission or knowledge.

This is a MUST! – Buy Norton Internet Security for High Speed Internet like DSL and Cable every year for $50 – Buy Norton Antivirus for Dialup Internet every year for $30 – An alternative is to use the free AVG Free antivirus You are NOT protected if you don’t pay yearly!

The #1 way to speed up 90% of the Windows computers is to remove the spyware. • Most people get Malware because they downloaded free software, games, or went to gaming websites. Although you can get it from just surfing the Internet too. Free comes with a cost! • Porn websites are known for installing lots of Spyware that can cause popup windows on your computer even if you aren’t on the web!

Slide 20: #1 Communicate with your child • 1.Talk to your child and set clear guidelines for Internet use. – Chat and email only with friends – Discuss what websites, times allowed on computer and computer in public place – Only post information and pictures you don’t mind anyone including your parents seeing – Never share personal information such as your age, address or phone number online – Never email bank or credit card information or send that information through a chat – Realize that everything that is posted online is permanent. On average, every person is sent 4 porn emails a day • Place the computer in a public place where the screen is visible. Slide 24: #3 My Space & Facebook • Check and see if your child belongs to a social forum such as MySpace.com or Facebook.com – Never post personal information on it such as your address, phone etc. – Limit who can see your web page. Only allow your friends – Post only appropriate pictures and information. This protects your identity online • Never share personal information such as: • Address • Phone Number • Social Security • Age • Talk about posting photos online. Make sure only friends can see your photos or they are password protected. There have been cases of students pictures had been modified by predators online to be sexual. Predators can use personal information posted online and track you down in 30 minutes or less!
Slide 26: #5 Talk to your kids • Talk to your kids about whom they chat with, websites they visit, and general computer experience. • Remind them to tell you about pictures, emails, or chats that make you feel uncomfortable. – Delete bad emails. You can prevent most sexy emails by limiting who can email you. – Forward junk emails to spam@uce.gov It is illegal to send SPAM in Virginia. – Don’t invite or respond to people in chats or chat rooms that are strangers or that make you uncomfortable.
Slide 27: Internet Safety Tips • The email and IM username should not be your child’s name or have personal information • Passwords should be letters and numbers at least 8 characters • Don’t sign up or register for free or prize websites. Most of these websites just want your personal information and email so they can send you JUNK emails • Create 2 email accounts. 1 for friends and family and 1 for when you sign up for websites and software. This is your junk mail email.
