See the video at our website below. www.survail911.ca ==== ==== Nearly one-third of all people aged 65 and older will experience some type of fall this year. Almost 30% will die as a result of the fall and less than one half will return to an independent life. In the US, this age group is expected to double by the year 2030. Most people seem to want to stay in their homes for as long as possible. This has created problems for some family members and friends. We seem to be the last ones to realize how aging has affected our welfare and safety but technology has advanced to the point where family, friends and medical personnel can be notified within seconds of a home accident. This technology is known as Personal Emergency Response System (or PERS). PERS systems are two or three component systems. The two component, simple system involves a small radio transmitter (also known as a pendant) and a console which is connected to the home telephone. This system allows the user to push the emergency button on the transmitter and contact family or friends via the phone line. The three component system includes the pendant, the console and a connection to an emergency response center. If the user pushes the transmitter button on the pendant, an agent of the center will speak directly with the user in order to determine the type of emergency, review the caller's medical history and notify the appropriate party. Utilizing radio frequencies and DTMF or pulsed (phone) dialing, PERS systems have saved thousands of lives. There are some limitations to most of these systems, however. Usually, the user must be within talking range of the console in order for the system to work. New units have recently come out, like LogicMark's LifeSentry unit, which allows the user to speak directly into the pendant. This unit has a range of up to 600 feet. The user could be in their garage or back yard and still be able to maintain contact with the console. Another issue could be the monthly monitoring fee which the three component system would require. This fee is usually around $20 per month and may require the user or family member to sign a contract. There are dealers who do not require a contract. It is important to check with the seller, at the time of purchase. The two component system would also eliminate the need for a contract (and the monthly fees) but would only notify a pre-determined list of family or friends of any emergencies. Most PERS systems require the user to keep the transmitter with them, at all times. They are usually water-resistant and can be taken into the shower. LifeSentry also offers an optional Emergency Wall Communicator which can be permanently mounted at the bedside or in the bathroom. It acts as the pendant, eliminating the need for the user to remember to take the pendant into the bathroom or anywhere else the user would want to put one. New technologies, like PERS, are emerging which, when utilized properly, are allowing our aging
Slide 2: population the choice of staying in their homes much longer than they have ever been able to in the past. To insure safety and comfort, it is imperative that the end-user be paired with the PERS system that meets their needs.
