Slide 1: Optical Illusions By:Kirsten S.
Slide 2: Welcome! I’m Kirsten and I’ve been studying weather illusions.Check out what I found!
Slide 3: * Why Does the Sky Look Blue? The sun shines white and black light on the earth. Blue light scatters across the planet causing us to see blue sky. At night no sun shines on the earth so we see space.
Slide 4: *Why Do We See Other Colors at Sunrise and Sunset? Light is longer at the horizon. More dust gathers where the sun and earth meet, causing reds, pinks, purples, and other colors to form.
Slide 5: *Northern Lights The northern lights occur when the sun interacts with the Earth’s outer atmosphere. They are also called Aurora Borealis. In the southern hemisphere they are called Aurora Australis.
Slide 6: What Is A Halo? Halos are rigs around the moon or sun                                                                           created by light refraction through thin ice crystal clouds. They are red inside and blue on the outside. www.Atopics.com
Slide 7: What is a Sun Dog? Sun dogs are bright spots that appear on either side of the sun shining through cirrus clouds. They happen at might too! Then they are called moon dogs. www.wikipedia.com
Slide 8: Crepuscular Rays Crepuscular rays are bands of light shining through clouds. The Egyptians said they were openings to the under world. Wikipedia.com
Slide 9: Sun pillars Sun pillars are luminous streaks of light. Sometimes they are slightly red. They extend from above and below the sun. Light is reflected by mirror surfaces of ice. You will see them at sunrise and sunset. Wikipedia.com
Slide 10: What are Blue moons? A blue moon is when 2 full moons happen in one month. Every 2.7 years a blue moon occurs. There isn’t and never will be a blue moon recorded in February because there are only 28-29 days. Wikipedia.com
Slide 11: Are they really blue? Most aren’t but if there is a volcanic eruption or even a forest fire they can look blue. weatherwizkids,.com
Slide 12: What are blue jets? A blue jet looks like a blue column of light that squirts out of the tops of thunderstorms at 62 M.P.S.! They can go 25-30 miles high. No one knows what causes them. weatherwizkids,.com
Slide 13: Thanks for watching! I hope you learned something so next time you see something you know what’s going on! *I got my info off of: www.weatherwiz kids.com
