The major dangers of liposuction involve possible infection, swelling, organ damage, burns, lidocaine overdose, pulmonary embolism and fluid imbalance. Infection Infection is always a concern after liposuction surgery. It can be mild to severe. Some doctors prescribe antibiotics to be used immediately after surgery to help prevent infection. If an infection does occur, you will have tenderness, redness and visible streaking from the area. It is accompanied by high fever, chills and even vomiting. A bad infection can cause you to lose areas of tissue or even your life. Swelling Swelling is caused by edema, or fluid in the tissues. Edema can persist for weeks or even months. This can put pressure on the nerves, causing tingling and even numbness. A pocket of fluid may develop in one area. This is called a "seroma". If this occurs, you will need to have the doctor drain it with the use of a needle. Wearing compression garments can help reduce swelling. Organ Damage It is possible for the cannula to puncture internal organs. The intestines are usually the organs that experience this. A major problem with this is that it may not be known until later, when you develop infection in your intestines. Treatment will then require major surgery. Death can result from this kind of infection. Pulmonary Embolism This occurs when small pieces of fat get into the lungs. You will have difficulty breathing. If this happens, call 911 or get to an emergency room immediately. Not treating it will be fatal. Burns Ultrasonic liposuction can cause burns. The surgeon can reduce the chance of this by being sure the instrument is completely under the skin and being careful not to leave it one area for too long. Lidocaine overdose It is possible to receive too much lidocaine. This is very rare but is a problem of which you need to be aware.
Slide 2: Fluid Imbalance Fluids are injected when you have tumescent liposuction done. This can lead to fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), heart and/or kidney failure. Death 3 out of 100,000 liposuctions result in death. The Cosmetic Dangers of Liposuction Other risks are more cosmetic and include excess skin, irregularities in contour and scarring.
