There are tomato growing problems which home tomato growers seem to frequently encounter over and over again that can easily be avoided with the right care. We're going to discuss several of them in this article. Wilting Diseases TSWV - Officially known as "tomato spotted wilt virus", this disease is spread from the leaves and stems to the tomatoes themselves. It is symptomized by cankers forming on the stems and bronze colored spots on the leaves. The affected tomatoes will show rings and yellow spots throughout the fruit. There is no real treatment for this disease and all affected plants must be thrown in the trash (not on the ground). The best way to deal with it is to start your planting with certified virus-free seed. It should be labeled as resistant to TSWV. Verticillium and Fusarium Wilts - These are fungus borne diseases which are very similar to each other. Both diseases are characterized by yellowing and wilting of the leaves. They cause stunting of plant growth and defoliation. These diseases can be prevented by choosing fungal resistant seed varieties (labeled VFN). Rotting Diseases A common tomato rotting disease is soil rot which is a brownish rotting on the sides of the tomato fruit. It is caused by fungi and can show up during excessively rainy periods. The fungus is in the soil and is caused by contact with the fruit when rain washes soil on to the leaves, but most often when the tomatoes are allowed to settle to the ground during development. The easiest solution is proper staking to support the tomatoes off the ground. There are also special mulches on the market which can be added to the soil to remove the fungus. Another rotting disease is blossom end rot which is caused by uneven watering of the plant. Symptoms of blossom end rot are brown or black watery blotches on the blossom end of the tomatoes. Blossom end rot can be easily prevented by proper watering control of your plants.
Slide 2: Many tomato growers make the mistake of forgetting to water their plants for a few days and then deluging them with water to make up for the difference. These wide swings in watering cycles cause calcium deficiencies which bring on the disease. The best watering technique is a constant, even application of water to the soil of your plants near the roots every other day. Some growers prefer to use drip irrigation through a drip hose. A simple and inexpensive alternative is to poke a few small holes in a one gallon milk carton and bury it in the soil near your plants. Fill it with water and let the water gradually settle into the surrounding soil over time. Conclusion Proper seed selection and environmental control can eliminate most common tomato growing problems.
