There are definitely a lot of things to consider when going to the Marines because it entails huge commitment. Just because you don't have plans for your future it doesn't mean that you can use the USMC as a scapegoat. This is one decision that you have to think about all through and through. Read a lot of information so you can avoid surprises especially the bad ones. It would tremendously help if you can get a book about survival tips and how you can prepare yourself both physically and mentally. If it will take you one year to get ready then by all means use all that time. There are plenty of things you will learn when going to the Marines. The first few weeks will be hell but once you get adjusted, you will realize that you can do things you never thought you would ever do. You would learn the importance of teamwork when overcoming adversities. You learn to be independent but at the same time, you learn how to work in a team. After you graduate from the boot camp, you will be given 10 days of leave to go back home and then you would have to report to the School of Infantry either Camp Pendleton CA or Camp Geiger SC. If your Military Occupational Skills (MOS) is Infantry, you will stay at School of Infantry for a number of months so you can learn different infantry tactics. If your MOS is non-infantry, you're definitely going to MCT (Marine Combat Training). After you graduate from MOS school, you will be headed to your first duty station and your career as a Marine will begin. Going into the Marines is not an easy decision, you have to get as much information as you can. Join in some online forums so you can talk to people who are undergoing the same dilemma.
