Losing fat however requires you expend more calories during the workout phase than you take in, allowing your body to burn off surplus body fat as fuel. Most weight lifters accept that fat gain is inevitable when they are looking to gain weight through muscle building, however how much fat can be influenced. There are 2 approaches you can take when adding muscle mass: 1. Eat as much food as you can - some take the approach of cramming as much food into their bodies as they possibly can. They think the more food that goes in, the more muscle they will gain. This approach is misguided. The human body can only take on board so much muscle tissue at one time. Therefore the surplus calories that aren't used are just stored as fat. 2. Only eat so many additional calories to support muscle growth - the more moderate approach is to only eat the amount of calories needed and that's it. This allows you to get as much lean tissue as possible, without the additional sharp rise in excess body fat. How do you know how many calories you should be eating? Following a natural training program, most people can hope to achieve about 1/2 a pound to 1 pound of muscle per week. This isn't an exact figure, and can be decrease if the individual doesn't have the best genetics or isn't on the right diet. As you can see, with such modest muscle growth rate; 2 to 4 ponds per month, you really don't need to eat such high amounts of food. Your calorie balance will be so much more than needed for muscle growth and therefore will be turned into fat. General rule: Calorie intake = 250 to 500 calories above maintenance level This should allow you to put on muscle without gaining too much body fat.
Slide 2: This rule should be adjusted accordingly. If you notice body fat levels getting too high, then reduce calorie intake slightly. Keep track, this allows you to find the optimal calorie intake to suit your training. Take a patient, slow approach. The more time you spend adding muscle mass using optimal calorie intake, the less time and effort you will need to spend on dieting to lose the extra fat you have put on through over eating.
