As a mother of two young girls, I know how every child comes into this world with their own personality. When a child reaches a milestone there is nothing but rejoice in a parent's voice. One big milestone that I hear all the time from parents is "the baby just stopped taking the bottle and has switched to a sippy cup". And I could not agree more. It is a big achievement and now the baby is almost a young adult. But what a lot of parents do not realize is that if a sippy cup is not used properly it can cause a lot of irreversible damage. Milk, formula and fruit juices are very high in sugars. If a child is given either one of these drinks (i would hate to think that a child this age would be consuming soda), parents need to make sure that these are only restricted to their meal times. If the same drink is consumed over the period of a few hours then it can cause severe rampant tooth decay. If your child likes to drink at will, the sippy cup should only have water in it. But if the baby teeth keep on being flooded with sugary drinks, then the bacteria get to feed on these sugars all day. The byproduct of this feeding bacteria is an acid that causes cavities. I am sure there is no parent that would want to see their toddler being sedated to have cavities fixed. This can clearly be prevented if the above instructions are followed regularly. Drinking at will should be restricted to water only. Drs. orders: Use the sippy cup in its proper way and prevent tooth decay in your child!
